I think Hex is overrated. There are better things you can be doing with your limited spell slots and concentration.
Hex is a win more spell. It helps you win more against mooks but isn't as effective against tough enemies as a different spell would be.
Agonizing Blast is also overrated at levels 1-4. It is +3/+4 damage/round and competing against your limited invocations.
The at will spells are powerful. At will Silent Image gives your character something to do in a lot of situations. At will temporary HP is very strong early on. Your character becomes the most durable in the party. At will mage armour is also a waste. +1 AC is just not worth the invocation.
After level 5 agonizing blast at +8dmg/round starts becoming better.
