Making Sorcerer Eating Monster, suggestions?

Basic Reason for the Post: I want some help making a new creature. I was always bad at making them from scratch so I thought I'd tap some minds here for suggestions and comments.

Background: Much akin to how Mega-man (at least the versions I played on NES) took the ability of his enemies after defeating them, and the idea of "there can only be one" from Highlander where the life energy was taken by the victor of battle, etc...

Concept: A creature that feeds off the energy of sorcerers and gains abilities from the kill. I want this creature to be able to blend in with society either by natural appearance of disguise ability.


This is what I have so far (I'll update it as the idea evolves ...)

(I refered to the creature as "He" in all the ability descriptions because I have not yet settled on a name)

Spell-like abilities: At will - detect magic, prestigitation

Detect Sorcerer (Su): He is continuously aware of any sorcerer auras within 60 feet. The strength of the aura depends on the number of sorcerer class levels (sorcerer 1: Faint; 2-4: Moderate; 5-10: Strong; 11+: Overwhelming)

Absorb Spell Slot (Su): If he spends one uninterupted round in contact with a dead sorcerer's body, for 24 hours he gains a bonus spell slot equal in level to one less than the highest the dead sorcerer could cast. This bonus slot can be used for any spell that the dead sorcerer knows.

Leech (Su): By spending one uninterupted round in contact with a sorcerer's body that has been dead fewer than 1 minute, he gains a number of temporary hit points equal to the sorcerer's level. These temporary hit points last for 1 hour. He can not use his Leech ability on the same sorcerer more than once per hour.

Spell Resistance: Spell Resistance equal to 11 + class levels.

Bonus Spell Known (Su): Everytime he gains a sorcerer level, he gains a bonus spell known. This bonus spell known can be any spell he has used through the Absorb Spell Slot ability but of no higher level than spell levels he already knows.

Skills: He gains a +2 racial bonus on all Use Magic Device Checks.


Notes -

Name: The name is just a working draft name - if someone has a good one, please speak up.

Type: Given my wanting to have it fit into society, it was either this or an aberation with the ability to disguise itself. I went with Monsterous Humanoid though.. I'm open to arguments otherwise ...

HD: Based on creature type

Saves: Type dictated that good saves were ref and will and did what the book said about 1.5 * CR for good and 1 * CR for weak saves

Abilities: using the dopplganger as a base line and re-arranging and a couple shifts up and down

Skills: 12 points to distribute (due to creature type)

CR: ???
LA: ???

Spell-like abilities: I am still playing with this.. I know I want something innate here.. but still deciding what ...

Detect Sorcerer: I know that this is something I will def. keep. Though, I am still contemplating the range of the ability as well as the dividing lines for the aura strengths (I used the cleric levels in detect evil as a base line).

Absorb Spell Slot: Still playing with how I want this ability to function.. but this is the gist so far.

Leech: Still playing with how I want this ability to function.. but this is the gist so far

Spell Resistance: I added this on a whim. I am going 50-50 as to if I want to even keep this ability in here

Bonus Spell Known: I am pretty sure that I will keep this as is. Well, the idea of bonus spell known being obtained from sorcerers. I am open to comments about other ways to have this work. If this is too constricting, I am open to the idea of it being a bonus spell known each level gained (not just sorcerer level gained .. but some how that seems to strong to me.. but the idea does intrigue me).

Skills: I gave the racial bonus to UMD on a whim.

Yes, it may seem a bit puny but going back to the main concept for this.. it is supposed to gain its strength from those it has fed off of... so I would imagine through level advancement and after some combats, it will be more of a force to be wreckoned with and each will be unique in that it is an indivudual because of who it has killed (dictating what sorts of powers/abilities it has).

I also briefly considered opening this to other spontaneous casters (bards, etc.) but for some reason kept coming back to just sorcerers .


Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions?

The main problem with your setup now is its hard to judge the CR of the creature. Depending on what spells it has it could be a chump encounter for a level one party or a tpk for a level 9th.

What I suggest is using an ability similar to the barghest's feed ability (pg 22 of 3.5 Monster Manual).

Basically, everytime a siphon feeds off a sorc of equal hd or greater, it gains a level of sorceror. It might even gain perhaps a +1 to SR and other things like that.

This way you can set an initial CR for the base creature + 1 per level of sorcerer it has which is much easier to dm in the long run.
