Making the ranger a prestige class...

Paradoxish

First Post
Like a lot of people, I tend to feel that the ranger is a bit front-loaded when it comes to abilities.

Personally, I find it annoying that my players look at the ranger class as an easy way to get a few feats quickly and easily. In my last game I had to actually come out and say they couldn't take a level of ranger just for the first-level abilities. So, I was thinking that I only have a few options for my new campaign...

1) Fix the ranger class by spreading its early abilities out and possibly adding a few more - this is a possibility

2) Remove the ranger class alltogether <-- don't like this, since I like the concept of a ranger

3) Use an alternate ranger class <-- any good ones out there?

4) Change the class around a lot and turn it into a prestige class that can be taken at relatively low level

Number 4 is the one I was thinking about. The Forsaker class in MotW is what inspired this idea. A player can take a rank in Forsaker at character level 2 since the requirements are three feats (first level human fighter would get three feats). After thinking about it for a while, it occured to me that a ranger would make just as much sense as an "elite" fighter. First one learns to fight (hence taking levels as a fighter) and then eventually moves on to learning the intricacies of hunting and stalking through woodland areas.

For me, the idea of the ranger as a more elite warrior (ie, Aragorn) is much more appealing than the current ranger class. Additionally, the prerequisites would mean that I don't have to worry about my players taking the nrager class anytime they want to gain some quick abilities.

So what do you all think? If I were to go on and remove the ranger as a base class and replace it with a PrC would it work out? Any suggestions on what abilities a ranger prestige class should carry with it?

First off the Forsaker can't be gotten that early, the feat required are not on the Fighter Bonus Feat list. Sorry for the nit pick, but thought you should know.

Personally, I like the idea of a Ranger prestige class. If I were to redo the Ranger, that is the way I would go. Okay, I'm going to keep this as close to the core class as I can.

Prerequite: Track, Wilderness Lore 6 Ranks, Intuit Direction 6 Ranks, BAB 4+ (these can be highered or lowered depending on what one wants)

HD, Skills, Skill points, Saves, BAB: All the Same

Favored Enemy at levels 1,4,7, and 10
Ambidexterity Level two
Two Weapon Fighting Level 3
Improved Two Weapon Fighting Level 8

And then borrow a spell chart from the Assassin or something like that.

D'oh. :o Heheh... I wasn't too fond of the Forsaker's overall concept so I didn't read too deeply into it. My bad.

Anyway, it didn't occur to me until you posted it, but Favored Enemy seems a lot more useful when four of them are spread out over 10 levels instead of five over 20 levels. I was thinking a BAB prereq of +3, but other than that I think I'm going to steal your idea if you don't mind. It's pretty much what I had in mind (close to the standard class, just spread out a bit).

Just wanted to say that I don't think the ranger is front-loaded at all.

The problem is that it is boring past level 1, it lacks the incentive to take a second level which almost all the other classes have.

After all, all the classes are front-loaded to some extent:

Paladins - curing and massive saving throw boost
Rogues - sneak attack
Barbarians - rage, extra movement
Monk - all goods saves, evasion

... I could go on.

All of these (except the sorcerer) also have a compelling reason for taking level 2 in the class too... some extra class ability or spells. The ranger doesn't.

Cheers

Ranger Spells aren't boring though. They are great and easily can turn a battle. Just few people use them it seems.

Help yourself to it, I'm not sure how balanced it is, it took all of 2 minutes to come up with.

Personally I find them boring compared with, say, the paladin.

I dislike the way they have buff spells for animals (magic fang etc) but don't have buff spells for themselves ("I can't fight the golem, but I'll make sure that trusty the badger can get a bite in! Go, trusty!" :))

I dislike the way that they don't have the 24hr endure elements. It is bizarre, but paladins, clerics, wizards and sorcerers find it easier to withstand extremes of temperature in the wilderness than the ranger!

the 1st level entangle can turn a battle in the wilderness, I'll grant that. I don't think any of the 2nd level spells can (unless the 8th level ranger is facing 2-8 creatures of less than 4HD  ). 3rd level spells? nothing special there. 4th level polymorph self pops up, giving all manner of possibilities for carnage... but 14th level is a long while to wait! He even gets healing spells extra-slowly.

That's not to say that I'm unwilling to consider options that I've glossed over... I'd be interested in suggestions for great uses for some of the other spells - they just seem so Blah compared to the paladins bless weapon/protection from evil/greater magic weapon/dispel magic/holy sword/dispel evil etc.

Cheers

I would change the ranks required in Wilderness Lore and Intuit Direction, or your fighter will have to be at least 9th level before he qualifies, unless he has an unusually high Int.
