Making tougher undead

Mondrin

First Post
My party is romping around the Nightfang spire module. They are about to leave to rest for a bit after making a fairly good dent in the amount of creatures there. I want to give them something a little more challanging to deal with instead of just reanimating the various dead things around the place. I came upon the idea to have Gulthias and the heart create undead minions from the Dragon and Mooncalf bodies which are sitting on top of the spire. Even using the Zombie or Skeleton templates over at the WOTC site only creates a 6-8 CR creature, which isn't enough. Anyone know of any other Undead templates that can apply to non-humanoids ( which rules out Monte's Ghoul/Ghast template)?

From the srd

"Ghost" is a template that can be added to any aberration, animal, beast, dragon, giant, humanoid, magical beast, monstrous humanoid, or shapechanger.

To make them tougher, use the extra options from the Ravenloft 3e book if you can get access to it.

I don't know what a mooncalf is in 3e (I vaguely remember a half dog humanoid from 1e MM2) What type of critter is it?

If it is a humanoid or monstrous humanoid then you can go vamp

"Vampire" is a template that can be added to any humanoid or monstrous humanoid creature (referred to hereafter as the "base creature").

Also Ravenloft 3e and Relics and Rituals have templates for mummies.

Hey RogueJK, was that a nasty storm or what?!

Sure was. Not as bad as the one that ripped through downtown Ft. Worth a few years ago, though...

The sad part is that we aren't even into the "bad" portion of the tornado season... that doesn't officialy start until May. :p

Oh I see... Nobody cares what we city boys think about the weather. :(

Actually, my wife calle dme home from work at 6:00, and I had to wear my sunglasses the whole way home. Behind me, and in the opposite direction from work, looked pretty nasty though.

Has there been a count of the number of mobile homes hit? I haven't seen any, which would be a shock. :)

[EDIT] I was downtown during that one. I was in the basement of the Law School (in the IRS building) though, and didn't even realize anything was going on. Imagine my surprise when I walked out to go to my car and saw the glass strewn all about the streets!

And, so we rednecks don't get a reputation as highjackers...

There aren't a lot of undead templates running around. The creature collection has juju zombies and zombie lords. They too specify humanoid only, but there's really nothing to stop you from ignoring that requirement... You are the DM right? :)

Yeah, that's pretty much how it was here, too. Lots of thunder, but not much rain. The footage of the storm when it got over towards Dallas seemed fairly nasty, though.

Oh, and to keep this on-topic... ;)

I think that you could take any of the various zombie-ish templates and add them to most non-humanoid creatures (despite what the template itself might say).

And I agree with kreynolds. If your players are of high-enough level, a Dracolich is always a good choice. If you are running Nightfang, that means the party ought to be around 10th level. You could probably try throwing a Juvenile or Young Adult Dracolich at them. It all depends on how you run dragons... That plays a major role in their difficulty. (The Dracolich template is found in the FRCS, BTW.)
