[March] What are you reading?

I am currently re-reading Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen by H. Beam Piper. Possibly the best time travel novel written in the last 70 years. This, of course, is inbetween reading all of my Scarred Lands source books :D

Good choice! I would also recommend Piper's Paratime short stories - fun stuff. The short stories, Last Enemy, Time Crime and Temple Trouble, are fantastic reads with lot of interesting ideas. I just wish Piper wrote more Paratime stories before his unfortunate death - oh well, I'm sure some where out there in another alternate universe he is doing just that. :)

As for Lord Kalvan, at one time I thought of doing a d20 conversion of the material, but alas I just don't have the time to do it justice.

Down Styphon! :D

Cheers,
Tim

Right now, reading Edgerton's The Queen's Necklace, set in the same world as Goblin Moon. So far, very good.

I didn't know she had a new one out. Hopefully one of the local bookstores will have it.

I read these years ago and have fond memories of them... Fun undemanding stuff, I might dig my copies out now... :)

Overall not bad reads...I forgot about the dog, eagle, bear riding. The stories flow quickly. :)

Let me see...

I've got the Kiln People by David Brin (pretty good so far, though I haven't the faintest idea what's going on)

Skin Game, the new Dark Angel novel (just started it so I can't say how good it is)

I'm also rereading The Girl, the Gold Watch and Everything, by John McDonald. (I love this story. I cannot recommend it enough.)

That's it for right now. Don't ask why I'm reading three books at the same time.

I just finished Raymond Carver's "Where I'm Calling From"
I also have the last four Black Company Books (Glen Cook) and hopefully I'll start on the Vlad Taltos books by Stephen Brust (I have the first 3).

Excellent choices on Cook and Brust there, Claude.

/start tangent/
I picked up Steven Wolfram's "A New Kind of Science," and have spent 200 pages hearing about how he's going to prove something really impressive, but seeing little actual proving going on. Anyone out there know if he actually does get around to it?
/end tangent/

I've been reading story hours lately. They're cheap, and I don't have to cut the umbilicus connecting me to the computer...

Just finished Elizabeth Haydon's trilogy... the one that starts with Rhapsody. Fairly eccentric as fantasy goes... had a lot of good ideas woven into the story. I'm plagiarizing the heck out of it for my campaign, of course... especially since none of my players have come across the novels as yet.

Of course, the names will be changed to protect the innocent...

This really made me smile as I have most of Piper's science fiction works (Terro Human Future History and Paratime) and am missing only one collection brought out about 15 years ago and his two mystery novels. I re-read them now and again and really enjoy his writing style. No one has come close to duplicating him IMHO.

The Paratime stories you mention are really the heart of the whole Paratime universe Piper created and can all be found (along with Lord Kalvan) in a book released just 3 years ago called the Complete Paratime. Wonderful edition.

A d20 version of Piper's Paratime or Future History series would be pure gold to me - but highly unlikely, I'll just content myself with the occasional mention of his works in Traveller :)

edit - Sorry this is actually Holy Bovine talking(see what happens when I get all jazzed up about Piper? Forget to see who's logged in!)
