[March] What are you reading?

Still slogging through The Queen of the Damned. After that, I'll read The Tale of the Body Thief, the last Anne Rice book I'm ever gonna touch. Once I'm finished with these two turkeys, I'll be picking up Michael Crichton's Eaters of the Dead and after that, Robert A. Heinlein's Starship Troopers.

"The last English king" by Julian Rathbone.
Its written as a first hand account told/remembered by one of Harold Godwinsons Housecarls (elite bodyguard) who survived the battle of Hastings.
If you like historical novels, this is a great one. The author doens't shy away from anachronism, but in a way that enhances a modern readers understanding of the period.

I just finished reading " 13th Legion " by Gav Thorpe. Its a Warhammer 40k novel. Didn't want to read it for the longest time, but when I finally did read it, I liked it. It was quick and fun.

I guess I'll read " Kill Team " now. That's a sequel to it I guess. More stories of the Last Chancers.

But so far, the best Warhammer 40k novels [if anyone here cares for 40k stuff at all] is the "Eisenhorn Trilogy". Although, for maximum effect, I'd suggest reading up on the setting before reading the book. Which would be to read the small chapter in the main 40k rule book, and the background info in the Inquisitor rulebook. If you're not into this kind of setting after that, then you may not think the Eisenhorn Trilogy to be that cool. But to me, I find the setting to be pretty nice and thus that is why I enjoyed the series. Dan Abnett is easily their strongest writer.

Odd how good a series based on a table top wargame could be.

Tales of the Dying Earth - Jack Vance

Includes 4 books: The Dying Earth, The Eyes of the Overworld, Cugel's Saga and Rialto the Magnificent.

Interesting stuff, you can see where some elements of AD&D came from for sure.

I just finished Glory Road by Robert Heinlein and I'm just starting The Spook Legion by Kenneth Robeson (it is a Doc Savage adventure originally published in 1935).

After that... I have a stack of A. Bertram Chandler novels that I've been meaning to read (not that anyone knows who he is :p).

Cheers,
Tim

Just finish
Sarek Soul star trek
Taylor's ark
Daily life in roman times. copywrite 1953
couple of mags on model trains
dragon mag
will probably grab a new nonfiction off the shelf tonight.

BTW, finished reading the George RR Martin short story in Dragon #305. Can't wait for A Feast of Crows to hit bookstores!

Just finished Astro City TPB. Not bad, but glad I loaned it. Did buy the 30 Days of Night autographed TPB, and it's pretty good. Minimalist, effective storytelling.

Let's see...
1) Jennifer Government by Max Barry. Great fun, good quasi-dystopian novel (and by far the most plausible one I've read).
2) Star Wars: New Jedi Order. I'm on the Aaron Allston duology right now.
3) Savage Species. I'm probably the only man in the world who reads his game books cover-to-cover just for fun.

Demiurge out.

The Scramble for Africa. I'm about halfway through.

Once that's done, I'll turn to something lighter - probably one of the Pratchett books that are out that I haven't picked up, yet.
