Mark of Doom (PHBII)

Spell causes an enemy of an opposing alignment to take 1d6 damage for each hostile action.

Would a creature take damage for each attack in a full attack action? I would assume so.

Likewise, I would assume the creature would take only 1d6 for multiple attacks as part of a standard attack option such as Manyshot or for using an AOE magic like fireball.

Correct? Incorrect?

I'd also let a creature decide if they wish to follow through with a full attack after the first hit. You can decline to take advantage of all of your attacks, and that should come into play before all the damage is applied.

No. It is a full attack action. That is one action not one action per swing.

If it were written as each "hostile act" I'd agree with you.

How about the fact that it's written as "the student takes 1d6 pts of damage each time it ... makes a melee or ranged attack ..."?

That is a bit diffrent from what the_mighty_agrippa posted.

FranktheDM is still right, I think.

When I first read the spell, I thought "whow" as well - what a killer vs. multi-attackers.

But consider the power level of this spell if it dealt 1d6 for every single swing/shot/whatever.
A dedicated two-weapon fighter would easily take 6d6-8d6 damage each round.

Now, let's take a 16 th level paladin with Practiced Spellcaster.

For a 2nd level slot, he'd have the theoretical ability to cause 84d6 damage to the TWF-target, as long as the opponent keeps on attacking. No save. No SR.

Now 7d6 may not be that much at high levels & in most "standard" encounters, but in a drawn-out, Combat Expertise-heavy melee, it might soon become an unbalancing factor if one target takes an extra 25 points per round without any chance to avoid it (apart from breaking combat and buggering off). That's simply way too good for a pally 2 spell.

You wouldnt get it for manyshot as that is only 1 roll of the D20.

I take hostile action as each time your roll the d20 to attack.

The spell does not say "hostile action." It expressely states the actions involved. One of the actions it states is "makes a melee or ranged attack"

Every attack in a full attack action would cause damage.
