Marshal - Quick Question

Marshals make fun cohorts. The ship captain in my Eberron game (a prominent NPC, since the game revolves around sea life) is a warforged marshal/artificer. Very useful for a ship, since it benefits everybody aboard.

What really doesn't make sense is that marshals are supposed to be leaders, not followers. Hence I have a hard time believing such a character would agree to serve as a cohort, at least for any prolonged period. Yes, I know there is nothing in the RAW saying marshals CANNOT be cohorts, but read the flavor text for the class and you will understand my position. Besides all that, taking a marshal as a cohort is almost too good to be true. Those auras can have a much bigger impact on your character than having a buff cleric or wizard as a cohort because their auras are up practically 24-7.

Think of a marshal cohort as a tactical advisor, rather than a commander. Considering that most militaries are going to have, at thier head, a king or other royal person with no actual military training, I think marshalls should be used to being under the command of civilians.

honesly i nevet liked the marshal, it always seemed underpowered cause you depend on everybody else to do basicly everything, sure you help out combat but you cant really do much even compared to other support characters. the mashal has nothing that makes it shine so to speak. if a marshal was say seperated from the group it has nothing all that great to fight by itself with. and it alwasy seemed onlt truly effective if leading a large amount of chars, its meant for armies and mass combat, somthing d&d dosent handle to well unless you use a third party suppliment.

i think the marshal should instead be a 10 lvl prestige class that specialises in leading troops, there have been a few other commander type prcs but this one could make a good one.

Yea, I just don't like the marshal. :) He's too cheesy for my tastes.

But Marshal is a substandard class for higher levels. Besides, he's a cohort to a Paladin and I envision the cohort as his aide-de-camp and the commander of his followers. The Paladin is the main warrior in the party, so I was thinking that he "leads from the front" while the Marshal keeps the troops in good order. Call it Grant/Sherman or Lee/Longstreet (probably the better of the two examples). A risk taker and a solid professional.

Pkitty, I will stat him up shortly. Basically Marshal 8/Deepwood 2/OOTBI 10 or something thereabouts. Deepwood Sniper is just a dip to get more stuff :p
