I have, and also considered just using multiclassing.I have my own way of doing Martial Arts in D&D, but, have you tried incorporating it as a Sub-Class?
Like for example a Sub-Class for each type of Martial Art you want to emulate?
Personally, I prefer the maneuvers. It allows for styles that focus on grappling, striking, or are a blend of both.I would not add maneuvers to unarmed "feat", leave that as a separate feat and battlemaster.
Here is my take on it:
Martial artist:
Your unarmed damage is 1d6 or 1d10 if you have both arms free and not being grappled/grappling/in difficult terrain.
You can use STR or DEX for attack and damage bonuses.
As a Bonus action you can make one unarmed attack one Shove or one Grab attack
When you are grappling a creature, you have advantage on unarmed attacks vs that creature.
