Martin update

It's only been two years since the last book was published. I was hoping it would be done by now as well, but right now he's fairly on schedule as far as where he was in relation to the rest of the series, barring A Feast for Crows. I hope it won't take five years to come out, but all the others were two and change years apart. Also, he has been working on other projects (per the post) as well as A Dance for Dragons, so it's not like he's been sitting around doing nothing. It may not seem fair to the fans... but if his publishers are saying okay, then it's his perogative as a writer to write what he wants.

Of course, this is the reason I resisted reading his books for so long... I didn't want to have to wait for years in between each one. I should have listened to myself. :)

As to the original question... it's a tough choice between the two. Melisandre seems like the obvious one to me... which could be why it isn't her. Still, that would be my guess.

Given the setting of this novel, Melisandre seems to be the choice.

I'm a little disappointed though. Melisandre as a "magic wielding" character would be better preserved as a mysterious character - not a viewpoint character, I think.

I presume GRRM is using her as a means to tell Stannis' story, in the absence of Davos.

It might be that Davos does not make it out of White Harbour at all - and reports of his death may even be... without exaggeration.

I must say finally reading a new Jon chapter made me HUGELY excited to get ADWD. I know he's the cliche hero, but Jon's still my favorite. I missed his presence in AFFC more than I realized, it seems.

I probably won't update this page again for quite a long while, so let me close by saying once again that when A DANCE WITH DRAGONS is finished, I will post that news here. The moment I finish the book, I will log on and make the announcement.

Wasn't that in the last update as well, along with a note, that he wouldn't make another update before the book is finished? ;)

Bye

For me, until it's finished, I'm not picking up another book. I stopped at 3 and I'll wind up rereading them so I can remember what's going on.

Same here, but I stopped after the first.

I have yet to get through A Feast for Crows Unfrotunately when Martin split the book, he assigned every single surviving character on my 'favorites' list to Dance of Dragons.

I really need to get it read, but knowing that there is no Jon, no Bran, no Daenerys, no Tyrion... it makes me a sad wolf. :(

I'm in the same boat, with one exception -- little Arya, who is growing up into a VERY interesting character.
I've always thought she was interesting just because I can't help seeing her in D&D terms: First noble (though rebellious), then her Water Dancer training (Duelist, anyone?), then her time in the castle as a servant (rogue levels for the various disguise, bluff, hide, and such skills?), then her time now in training to be a "Faceless Man" (a *very* cool Assassin, reminds me of the ones in Dune).

I just hope she gets a few more chapters in Dragons, because she got a short stack in Crows, that's for sure.
