I always thought Gotham was NYC.

Gotham and Metropolis are fictional megacities that take their inspiration primarily from New York. Gotham also has influences from Chicago and London.
Gotham is named after "the wise men of Gotham" a legend wherein the men of Gotham village (Nottinghamshire) feigned idiocy to dissuade King John from camping there - the resulting adage was "We ween there are more fools pass through Gotham than remain in it."

Washington Irving applied it to NYC in 1807 and according to Bill Finger, they chose to call Batmans hometown Gotham instead of New York so more people could identify with it.
 

That trailer actively irritated me. The "job interview" hook manages to be both a cliche and incredibly stupid, and the rest of it looks like predictable superhero plot, but we've tried to make it for the youth.
