Mass Combat?

First Post
Are there mass combat rules out there somewhere? I remember seeing a post about it a while back....but its been a while. My campaign is going to have a LOT of mass combat, so i wanted to see if there were rules for it.

There are several books on the subject. The two I am most familiar with are D&D Minaiatures Handbook by Wizards of the Coast, and Cry Havoc by Malhavoc Press. Both books contain different approaches to mass combat. The Miniatures Handbook approach requires you to have a large table and lots of miniatures, and is much like a D&D version of Warhammer Fantasy. The Cry Havoc system allows you to use a battlemat and a much smaller number of counters/miniatures, and basically functions like regular D&D combat on a larger scale.

Fields of Blood

Fields of Blood is what I am going with for my mass combat rules, and Farland's mass combat system (on the ENWorld home page) is pretty good too. I recommend FoB because it has guidelines on running nations and production so you can see how big and what types of armies can be fielded by a given city/nation. Cry Havoc is another, but it is battle-only oriented and somewhat limited with what I was looking to do.

The campaign im going to be running (starts monday, will go up a few levels before we get to large battles, so i have a bit of time to get stuff) will have a lot of mass combat. Specifically, a horde invades faerun. (I posted about this a while back). Horde is split into Centuries(about 80 men or so) which are grouped into Cohorts(about 5 to 6 centuries) which are grouped in to a legion(10 cohorts), which are then put into a field army (10 legions). This makes a single army of about 50000 men. And there are 14 of these armies invading faerun at once from just north of the Silver Marches (starting with King Obould Many-Arrows). Thats approximately 700000 combatants. That does not include the 300000 other members (mostly experts and commoners) who support the armies.
Century = 80-100 men
Cohort = 400-600 men
Legion = 5000 men or so
Army = 50000 men or so

All im really needing is ways to have the mass combat, with the PCs as skirmishers/scouts on the side.

Mongoose Publishing's The Quintessential Fighter has some rules on mass combat, but I've never done more than glance at them, so I don't know the quality.

I have "Cry Havoc", and I like it. It will work for what you've described. Still, I am interested in "Fields of Blood". Is there anyone out there who can give a good comparison review?
