Master Transmogrifist - Which Favored Shapes?

Hey all!

Long time lurker finally getting around to posting a question of his own...

I'm asking for help in coming up with ideas for optimal shapes to choose for a variation on the Master Transmogrifist Prestige Class that my DM is prepping for my 7th level Wizard.

I say variation because everything this guy runs is based on 3.0 D&D, but heavily tweaked with his own 'insights' to make it 'more balanced'. I'm OK with that. If I weren't, I'd leave, but it means I have to be careful in making choices. I posted a similar question on rpg.net, but the responses so far have been focussing on the DM's style, which I want to avoid.

In any case, though he hasn't finshed 'tweaking' the Master Transmogrifist to his liking, he's giving me some input, and has let me know he's changing Favored Shape somewhat.

-First, once I choose a shape, I have to keep it - no swapping between levels.

-Second, I don't get the first shape until 2nd MT level, but get them more regularly after that, so that by 10th MT level, I have seven, just like in a regular MT progression.

-Third, he's upping the power of the 10th level to allow me to add the favored shape Supernatural and Spell-like abilities when in that form (or using Inifinte Variety), not just the extraordinary abilities. That's a pretty big power boost, and probably worth the other trade offs, however...

Not being able to swap out forms means I have to be very careful which one's I choose each time, hence the call for suggestions and ideas. Plus he insists we sketch out two or three levels in advance what we are planning to pick up, so I need to start thinking in the long term.

It's been awhile since I've played straight D&D, and I have not been relying much on the books, since things can be so different in his game, so I'm rusty on which might be the best creatures to choose. Help!

Thanks in advance,

Jack

...How many/much of the Supernatural and Spell Like abilities. If you become an outsider that can cast as a 15th level cleric, can you assume that ability?

If so, thats nuts.

Mindflayer and several outsiders come to mind. Light rays from a Lantern Archon on a guy that has many, many attacks sounds good. Clarify that first bit for me and I'll see iffin I can help.

Well, I'm guessing here as I haven't see the final writeup, but knowing other changes, I would say that the open-ended ability to cast additional spells is right out, but that specific spell-like abilities (such as a Brass Dragon's Speak with Animals ability) which is usable a number of times a day (possibly modified by his spell point system) is fair game.

Oops. forgot you can't do outsiders with polymorph.

Still
Will-o-Wisp
Choker for an extra action per turn. BAH-RO-KEN
DESTRACHAN
Nymph
Pixies have greater invisibility always in effect. Always good.
Mindlflayer maybe?
Mimic.

Really, I think choker and Pixie are your best bets.

Apparently with his version I can. It's specifically on a list of examples he gave me in his draft writeup. The types NOT allowed in his game are:

Construct, Ooze, ShapeChanger, Undead

Well then welcome to absurdity town.

Gibbering Mouther has an ability that makes you make a fort save or become instable.
Astral Deva make you make save or be stunned for 1d6 rounds if she hits you twice.
Lantern Archons and some Guarinals have Light Rays that bypass all DR. Kinda handy if you have 8 attacks.
Barghest can stop people from being revived. Handy on BBEG's
Demons can summon other demons.
Marilirth.
Efreeti and grant your party wishes!

Hell become a swarm, if you're allowed.

Consider going back to wizard a bit of the way through the class so you can come back and get better HD stuff later on.

No kidding. Even though I am to be the recipient of such largesse, I think I may have to recommend limiting his expansion to just Supernatural Abilities. That is a pretty big boost alone.

Ha! I was just reading that in the MM as you posted, and it convinced me the Spell-Like abilities were too great.

That's a VERY good point. And one thing that will limit my craziness is that he's requiring a great deal of study before each shape can be taken (Knowledge(Creature) 5), so they must be on hand, or have access to a good source of info on them beforehand.

We have a brass dragon we're keeping an eye on as he hibernates a year away and grows to his next size category. He'll probably be my first 'subject'.
