Is the default mutual? I've never seen it done otherwise that I know of, and inertia is a powerful force.

Why would you expect to see it? If it is not mutual, there's no outward sign of it.

James blocks Mark in the mutual way, then James can't see Mark, and Mark can't see James. Mark might notice and comment on how he cannot see James.

If James blocks Mark in the non-mutual way, then James can't see Mark, but Everyone can still see James. Mark won't comment on it, because they still see James just as they did before.

Conversation and discussion are not synonyms.

Being informed of something you have ignorance of is not a discussion.

Relaying anecdotes back and forth is not a discussion.

“Discussion” has connotations of formality and seriousness that “conversation” lacks.

What we are having here is a discussion. We have disagreements over the semantic content of certain terms and are both asserting our various positions in order to see if there is the possibility of compromise.

Aaaand, there go the goalposts, sliding off into the distance!

Fair enough, but if it is mutual it's quite clear. That's why I asked if the mutual option is default (is it?). A lot of people must really dislike me. That's disheartening.

I've never really the point of the ignore button, since it's mutual when one side uses it. I don't feel I have the right to force others not to see my contributions, and I've never felt their contributions were so bad I shouldn't see them. So I just never exercise the option.
There are some people on the site that really grate on me, my forum viewing has improved immensely with them blocked, far nicer experience. Fair if you don't want to use it, but I think the block button is invaluable.

Also, when banter/tease online the audience is not just the target of the bantz, but every other person on the platform -- and it's impossible to know that one's rudeness is meant to be funny because they lack the context your target might have

Good natured ribbing, or vicious attempt to knock you down the social status ladder? Only their hairdresser knows for sure.

Ok. The way I see it, anyone who's so bad I don't want to see their posts will get kicked altogether soon enough, but everyone has a different line.
