but really... $3.00+ a minis is steep... it is a piece of plastic!

Beautiful, beautiful plastic... I love that smell. the way they bend on a really warm day after sitting in the sun... how they talk to one another...

But hey, when demand is up, raise prices...

The debate in the thread I forked from brings up an interesting point: how can you get the most minis for your dollar? Therefore, I challenge the posters of ENWorld to offer their sage advice. I offer the following constraints:

1) minis need not be produced specifically for D&D, but should generally be vaguely fantasy themed
2) Where possible, please include links to good deals, such as an amazon or ebay storefront, or perhaps a link to a FLGS page that employs some form of unique deal
3) Any special effort is allowed but should be included. This includes re-basing, assembling or painting, to name a few.
4) If you are making any value decisions besides max ratio of Minis/Dollars, include your value. For example if you have a method of cheaply acquiring many 3x3 (Huge) or larger minis, then you are my friend and should post that method.

My own personal experience was that, due to its loss of popularity, I was able to acquire a number of Mage Knight: Dungeon Minis for relatively cheap. They had the added bonus of being dungeon themed and including things like tables and treasure chests for dungeon decoration. Special considerations I had to make were that the MK bases are slightly larger than an inch: 1.25 inches to be exact. While rebasing might have been an option for smaller minis, because I wanted to also play MK dungeon I simply limited myself to using the minis as large monsters. Additionally, a few of the minis have simply extracted themselves from their bases of their own accord, and a few that had wide feet have served well while "free basing."

That's my story, let's hear yours!

For any pre-painted plastic minis, like D&D minis, buy them by the case and/or surf for cheap prices on common figures. Best place for both is eBay. Dirt cheap prices on common figures might change a bit with the new distribution of D&D minis, but time will tell on that.

When a game dies due to lack of interest, like your MK Dungeons figures, then they can be had for a steal. You can still probably find pretty good deals on the various "clix" games from WizKids, and on Dreamblade minis from WotC. Searching eBay and also widening your search on google should hook you up.

I use the boxed sets of plastic WFB minis. I love painting minis and can use these things in both WFB games and in D&D.

Plus, you can sometimes get good deals. I got two packs of 20 Zombie Pirates of the Vampire Coast models for $10 each from my local GW because they needed to get rid of the models.

The best bit about the GW WFB plastic models is the fact that you choose how you build them (weaponos used, etc) and they are super easy to convert or kit bash!

sorry, but what is WFB? also do you have a link to these minis? I'd like to see what they look like.

Warhammer Fantasy Battles from Games Workshop.

They don't make the Pirate Zombies of the Vampire Coast any more, but here's a link to the current zombies:

They're $35 for a box of 20 multi-part plastic zombies. That's pretty standard for the WFB minis. They're 28mm and build like a plastic car or airplane model. You have to paint them, but that's part of the hobby for me.

They sell other monsters, too. I play the wargame, but the minis work reat for D&D, too.

One thing I've found effective is trading values.

I.e. If I don't play in competitive DDM, then my 3 orc champions are very, VERY, valuable. One orc champion traded on WotC's site gained me about 20 drow common and uncommons. Same goes for Dragons; how many red dragons does one need? Answer: 1, maybe 2. If you have 3, that has amazing trade potential.

At DDM's zenith, I'd scour hordlings and maximinis to find the most sought after tiered group minis and see what I had of those that I didn't use (young master and a bunch of githzerai monks gained me a 5-to-one ratio on hobgoblins for my Red Hand of Doom outing).

Also, get a group of people online together who are interested in "group ownership". We traded minis to eachother as need arose. Thus, when I needed a Behir, I traded my Tiamat until that part of the campaign was over. We traded back when I needed Tiamat, etc... (BTW, this one's not a good idea if you don't trust people...or happen to be a klepto).

Magic the Gathering, magic cards, singles, Miniatures, Board Games, Supplies at CoolStuffInc.com. gives a discount on singles based on the total amount you've spent there. The shipping can be a little high, but it balances out after a while.

Ebay stores with buy-it-now is also a good move if you're looking for certain minis that tend to go for a lot, but aren't really worth a lot (yuan-ti fall in this category). Look through all the listings and you can often find a low payment low shipping option that beats out the bidding wars (they don't last long, so purchasing is somewhat a requirement when they're found).

For animals, a few dragons and the like, try Safari Ltd.'s Toobs and Megatoobs. Each comes with about 8 figures, and the price is in the $5-7 range. Most of the dragons in the Dragon's Lair II toob would fit as horse-sized next to D&D minis.

BBI's Fire Dragon (from their Warriors of the World series) is a veritable lookalike for the D&D black dragon, and would fit well as a Huge or Gargantuan dragon (it is larger than the DDM Aspect of Tiamat, but much smaller than the Gargantuan Blue Dragon): Fire Dragon - Legends by BBI - Sierra Toy Soldier Company

I've used Toobs in the past, with great success. I also recently picked up a bag of a dozen dinosaurs, scaled fairly accurately to D&D figurines, for under $5.00 at a Nobbies party shop.

And, if nothing else is available, I'll just print out an appropriately-sized picture of the creature in question and cover it in clear ConTact paper for a quick counter.
