[May] What are you reading?

You I'm torn with Exile's Honor... On one hand, Albereich is one of my favorite characters from her books, and Karse fascinates me, ever since I read the Mage Storm series... But on the other hand, it was too short, and felt rushed. Had it been done as a trillogy, even of shorter books like the Heralds of Valdemar trillogy, it would have been better... As it is, it felt too rushed...

To some degree, that's how I see all the single books. They come across like she really likes her protagonist, but doesn't want to get into a large plot around them. Some of that is probably being written into a bit of a corner by going back to characters who have established pasts that don't include kingdom-shaking events and such. If Skiff saved Valdemar, then why did it never come up over the course of three prior books that featured him heavily? But she could project the extant characters into the future. Alberich's too old for that, but people like Skiff and Karal aren't that old and could easily have future adventures in some kind of post-Selenay Valdemar.

Speaking of, I'm really wondering how old Selenay is. She's an adult with a child around six when Talia first sees her, and more recent books have made it look like Talia's gotten fairly on in years. Likewise the first Davan book seems to describe the Mage Storms as something that happened at least several years prior, and had more of the feeling of a decade or more.

I really, really, really want her to write a trillogy about the founding of Valdemar... We have heard snippets of the story so often, I really want to hear more. And a book (even if it's only a single one) set in Iftel after the Mage Storms might be cool.

Both of those would be great. I could go for seeing more of Davan too, but that's probably because I never found the middle book of his trilogy and thus didn't go past the first. I don't know if she left him in a position where she really could go back to him.

I'm reading Initiate brother and Gatherer of Clouds by Sean Russel. I've read them before several times but find them such an enjoyable read it is worth it again. Not a better Psuedo Asian series have I read.

Also My At work book is Another day another dungeon by Greg Costiykan (Sp?) who is a gamer, game designer and entertaining writer for light hearted books. Reminds me too much of my beginning gamer days.

Don't have near enough time to read so that's about it for now.

Hell, I've seen that one two or three times in used bookstores around here... I could darn near (But not quite... Alpena is still a ways away) drive it to you :p

Davan? You mean Darien?

*checks books* Ok, I meant Darien. :) He's my favorite Lackey protagonist, beating out Vanyel by a nose.

One of these I'll work up the gumption to bend Amazon to my will with judicious use of a credit card and have their little gnomes carry it to my door. About the time I was really jonesing for it another book came up and demanded my attention.

Besides my gaming material for my campaign, I am currently about to start reading "Legacy of the Drow" by R. A. Salvatore. I just finished reading "The Dark Elf Trilogy" Collector's Edition by R. A. Salvatore about a week ago.

I believe there's another Alberich book coming out... Exile's "something". I read about it in Locus magazine (their website is www.locusmag.com ). Depending on when it comes out, it might be up at Amazon now with it's publishing date.

Just read a series of fantasy short stories, edited by Jane Yolen, called Xanadu 2. Pretty good, although a few of the stories were a little bit message-heavy for my tastes (I could practically see the authors drinking their herbal tea and sitting on their Berkeley porch and wearing oh-so-satisfied Birkenstocky smiles). Other than that, I've been catching up on my Peter Beagle lately: I had no idea how cool he was. If you're interested in some gently sardonic and kind of wise fantasy, he's your man.

I'm getting ready to honeymoon in Norway, and so I'll be taking The King and I with me, in preparation for the Thai-flavored story arc I'll be running when I get back home :).
