Yes, have fun. But please remember, that was possibly an actual human being. Before you make jokes about RPGs, remember that some poor youngster was born, and had to live some sort of life, that way.

We have no evidence that the ancients ever saw a skull like this, and good reason to think they did not [or that they were familiar enough with elephant skulls that they would have not mistaken it for anything human.]

The ancients had perfectly good imaginations. The story needs a nasty giant, so we give him one eye to make him monstrous. No further explanation is needed, or is likely.
