Mearls Blog: PHB2 is his best ever

Actually, his comments echo my feelings about 4e core -- that the need to get it "right" caused the designers to play it too safe, stay well within the lines and not push the engine at all. The supplementary material, such as Martial Power and many Dragon articles, is FAR more exciting/fun/interesting than the core rules. There was very little in the core game that excited me, that made me want to play, but the add-on material has brought back the "fun" factor the overly "safe" core rules lacked.
I understand what you mean about them playing it too safe. Would enjoy some examples of how the supplemental material has pushed the envelope.

Two things I really liked:
a)The Beastmaster ranger in Martial Power.
b)The entire "Gladiator" article in Dragon, esp. the weapon specialization powers -- basically, you subvert the multiclass mechanism to gain new powers in the same way you'd use multiclass feats to select powers from an alternate list.

That sounds similar to the spellscar system in 4e Forgotten realms.

I too am looking forward to the PHB2, as many other have mentioned. I t will be about the time that my 3.5 campaign winds down. Some of my players have been dismayed by the lack of their favorite classes. If I can keep them from dwelling on that fact right now, by the time we actually can play those classes will be fully available to them.

About the Wizard... I appreciate Jack99's clarifications about what Mearls said about the lack of controlling powers in the At-Will Powers-

[Editorial side note, I also get hypnotized frequently by Jack99's avatar, talk about a way to command a personal readership... ;)]

But you know, as much as I hear complaints about the marketing design of 4E (that is, the ongoing release of 'Core' books), it really works well here. Mearls didn't say the existing Wizard At-Will's were bad, but they lacked a selection of control powers to balance out the damaging ones. That's easy to fix by just providing a selection of powers that make the available choices a little more well rounded.

That seems to go hand-in-hand with the Power Source splat books. If they aren't pleased with the selection on something, they can increase it in the power source book. And, as others mention, color outside the lines a bit. I'm pretty pleased with Martial Power so far, though I haven't played with many of the powers in combat.

Conversation in early December, 2009:

HASBRO Exec: Mr. Mearles, we are gratified with your work on the phbII.

Mearles: Thank you. I think it is my best work ever.

HASBRO Exec: Oh, we quite agree. Now we must lay you off.

Mearles: But, but the phbII was hugely successful...

HASBRO Exec: On a D&D, WOTC scale, I suppose it was. However, it was your best, and now that we have your best we'll be kicking you to the curb. Good luck ol' boy.

You could at least have spelled his name correctly. Still funny though, all things considered :p
