Conversation in early December, 2009:

HASBRO Exec: Mr. Mearles, we are gratified with your work on the phbII.

Mearles: Thank you. I think it is my best work ever.

HASBRO Exec: Oh, we quite agree. Now we must lay you off.

Mearles: But, but the phbII was hugely successful...

HASBRO Exec: On a D&D, WOTC scale, I suppose it was. However, it was your best, and now that we have your best we'll be kicking you to the curb. Good luck ol' boy.
That's only true if the Exec is an internet messageboarder, and therefore takes everything as literally as possible. Best work to date, of course, best work to date.

I think it's intentional by the Hasbro guy - adding insult to injury!
Just nod, pogre.. ;)

mea culpa:o

I actually hope this book is a tremendous success. Adding to the core seems like an important part of the current D&D business model. If it does not sell enough I honestly fear that the misspelled scenario above could become reality.

I am often happy with what I wrote right after I wrote it.

Then I cool down, and I am unhappy with what I wrote.

Then more time passes, and I look at it again with new eyes. Sometimes I really like it (better than when I wrote it), and sometimes I wonder why I bothered to try to peddle the unmitigated **** that I thought was so cool before.

There's nothing wrong with being happy about what you wrote while cooling off. Your comments just shouldn't be taken without a huge grain of salt until after you've cooled off about it, either. Say, a year or more.

I'm pretty sure phb2 will sell, a lot. First, it will fill some gaps. This is specifically why some basic classes and concept were left out of phb1. It made phb2 somewhat necessary.
Also, the new options will certainly address a few balance issues and complaints about style or the lack of versatility, multiclassing feats and rituals.
That might even bring some 4e skeptics back.

As for Mearls comments, they don't say much about the book's quality. It's all subjective. He might as well say phb2 is "soo cool" and "more fun" than phb1 :) I've seen enthusiastic designers before.
