medieval town/city generation

Hey all, I'm just wondering if anyone knows of any resources for helping fill out the mundane details of a medieval town or city. Something that runs over the basics of what all cities would have (access to fresh water, a town watch, etc) and perhaps also some kind of charts for rolling up random buildings... so that when my PCs are walking down the street and happen to encounter some thugs or what-have-you I can describe the scene with a little more detail; 'this building is a *roll* candlemaker and here is a small *roll* cobblers...' and so on.

Midkemia's "Cities" could help you, as well as the Citybooks (especially the early numbers - butcher, baker, candlestickmaker for instance) . and of course a whole fleet of GURPS books - beginning from the middle-age fantasy world Yrth to the bunch of Low-Tech/Crusades/Whatever supplements.

edit: you find some sample pages of cities at http://www.midkemia.com

AEG's Toolkit (either version) has those charts.

Toolkit 1 is 3.0 i think and is available for very cheap on ebay etc.

Toolkit 2 is a lot bigger but also more expensive and rules neutral iirc.

This link has a ton of information for you - found elsewhere here in General RPG Discussion:

What did people do in a Medieval City?

I did a quick rundown of percentages of "common" craftsmen from 1292 Paris, of which there were about 2,100.

366 shoemakers 17%
214 furriers 10%
197 tailors 9%
131 jewelers 6%
106 pastrycook 5%

However, this is a small fraction of the total population, which would include governmental, religious and military occupations, as well as specialized occupations.
