Melee Attack and Cover

First Post
It appears that cover for melee and for ranged attacks has been made the same (choose 1 corner of 1 of your squares, trace line from there to every corner of 1 of target's squares, lines that run along obstacle or enemy square do not block) (ph 280).

So the 3.5 case of melee attacks around a corner providing cover no longer apply.

Am I missing anything?

It looks like the rules in the DMG are different from the rules in the PHB.

Clarification: The DMG has different rules for melee cover and ranged cover, with ranged attacks originating from a corner of your square and melee attacks originating from every corner of your square. The PHB only uses the single corner rules.

Also, the line of sight and line of effect rules seem to be slightly different from the cover rules, even though they basically serve the same purpose (aka, obstructed LoE is cover). I think the idea is that even if all four lines from your coner to the target square's four corners are blocked, there is a chance that there is some other line between somewhere in the squares that isn't blocked.

You are right GoLu, thank you.

The DMG on page 43 has special rules for melee attacks. Hopefully the differences between the two books will be covered in an errata soon. Now where was the thread for reporting those...
