Merric's thoughts on "Against the Giants" (DDM)

I doublechecked the cards and they matched the minis. I got two rares by mistake.

Thumbs up for box #2.

That's not a mistake. That's meant to happen.

In every single box of Against the Giants you'll get 3 normal commons, 3 normal uncommons and 1 normal rare.

You will also get one huge figure, which may be a huge rare or a huge uncommon (in a 1:2 ratio).

If you buy a case of AtG, you will get 6 regular rares, 2 huge rares and 4 huge uncommons.

Cheers!

The fact that there are two Dragonborn in the set, both which are rare, has already caused a lot of controversy.

Just to clarify: am I to understand that there are ONLY 2 Dragonborn in the set, both rare?

If so, DAGNABBIT!
The Ugly, Ugly Truth

While I too only collect the DDM for my RPG games, I'm dissapointed in this flaw- its really unforgivable. IME, we gamers are sophisticated and patient enough that we could have easily waited some extra months in order to get the correct info on the stat cards.

I came to that conclusion. We shall always see PC minis, because there's always someone who's "just getting into it."

It's not just that. For many games, human enemies are the norm, not the exception. Certainly in Living Greyhawk there were a lot of humans as foes, and I don't think it is alone in that. So you need variety in human minis as well.

Cheers!

I liked Against The Giants in general. I don't caree for the 4e influence but this is expected (I refuse to go 4e). There are still figures that have not been done that MUST be done.

Rust Monster anyone?

More aquatic themed would be nice

Cave Fisher?

Warforged Charger?

patience is a thing I can be short on.....

Rust Monster will be in the next expansion. (Edit: Source http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/4dnd/20080815)

As for Aquatic-themed monsters, for me that's probably unlikely mainly because aquatic-themed games aren't as popular (nor are there DDM maps that really support aquatic themes).

Warforged Charger is one of those interesting pieces to see but I expect won't be too popular (how different will the sculpt be compared to the Centaur?).

While I would totally love to see that, I suspect that, given how difficult it would be to make aquatic monsters that are good for DDM play, we won't see much- only creatures that can be on the land as well, like sahuagin and aboleths. I wouldn't expect a giant shark or anything, frankly.

Am I the only one disappointed to find NO minis in this set that are Homage minis to the 'Against the Giants' classic module. I had been looking forward to this set assuming that there would be some such goodies. What does the title 'Against the Giants' have to do with any of these minis, for that matter.

They may very well be great minis, but it was a disappointment for me

Well, actually the Rust Monster will be in the Feywild set. The next set is Demonweb.

It looks as if one of the 2009 sets will finally include the much-requested Aboleth! :D Since DDM 2.0 includes rules for water terrain, the likeliness of aquatic monsters becoming available as minins has increased. Still, monsters that are purely aquatic are still a problem.
