Metal Gear movie?

And I pity those people, for letting such a trivial detail ruin their enjoyment of a great game.

It wasn't trivial to me. I found the blonde guy (can't think of his name right now) to be an annoying twit. I enjoyed the game play, but I would have enjoyed it a lot more if I was playing Snake. That's how most of the people I know who played it felt.

Cthulhudrew: doesn't Metal Gear Acid (the PSP game) not feature a Metal Gear?

Didn't know that. My friend has it on his PSP (I don't have one myself) and I played it a little bit once, but never got very far.

Raiden. My guess is Kojima needed a clean-slate-character for the players to project themsleves on as he was taking Snake in a new direction. Snake was supposed to be without character but since he became so widely popular Kojima wanted to tell his story. Sadly this meant Snake needed to become an NPC. Raiden on the other hand was designed to appeal to everybody (males and females) and that's why Raiden almost was gender neutral. I'd like to see Tilda Swinton play Raiden. ;)

Well, the gameplay itself didn't much change between Raiden and Snake. Yeah, Raiden had his annoying moments (particularly in conversation with his girlfriend), but the game's ending brought Raiden and his issues to a satisfactory place with me. If he wasn't so anoying at first, I wouldn't have loved the ending so much.

In any case, just shows that sometimes gamers will get very uppity about the smallest things. Surprisingly, no one takes offense to the "annoyances" the game throws at you near the end.

Or else Kurt Russell. (I know- he's getting long in the tooth...)

Kurt Russell would be perfect. He's already done two movies as Snake.

Okay he was "Snake" Plisskin, but the character had to have been an influence on Solid Snake anyway.

Hideo Kojima was a huge fan of "Escape from New York." He's confirmed many times that he named Snake after, well, Snake. :)

Wonder what KR would look like with a mullet?

Count me as one who kind of came to like Raiden by the end. He definitely had some annoying moments- like you say, during his conversations with his girlfriend, he seemed to be channeling Farm-Boy Luke from episode 4. :)

(And he had an irritating whine in his voice at those times, too.)

You mean the 20 minute movie you have to watch even though there's no game left to play? ;)

I actually really like the opening scenes of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, when it almost seems like Kojima pulls off the same switch.

Hideo Kojima has talked a bit about the Raiden choice and how it did and didn't work, why he did it, etc. I don't have any links offhand, but it is some interesting reading if you can find the articles.

I don't think I would enjoy a live-action version of Metal Gear, but the idea of a CG movie like how it looks in MGS3 would be cool. You can even keep Hayter as the voice. :) If that did happen though, everyone would complain on how poor the CG looks when compared to the CG-heavy movies of today.
