Metamagic feats + spontaneous casting

Ukyo the undead

First Post
Can I use a metamagic feat, such as quicken spell, maximize spell, empower spell with a spontaneous cure/inflict light/moderate/critical wounds?

For example, I'm being beaten like hell by a enemy. I try then to spontaneously cast an cure critical wounds, but using a slot four levels higher, to quicken it, and healing myself with a free action.

Please don´t enter the topic "why should an cleric waste an 8th level-spell slot to use an cure spell?". It´s just an hypothetical question.

Why not? An spontaneous casting spends an standard action just like any other 1-action spell, while a quickened cure spell can be casted as a free action.

Or I am wrong?

Yes. ;) It's a common mistake.

When you apply metamagic to a spontaneous spell, the casting becomes a full-round action. You can find this rule on this SRD page, or in the Feats chapter of the PHB (in the 'Metamagic Feats' description). This means Quicken Spell is of no use in spontaneous casting, though it'd still work normally with his prepared spells.
