Extend is very useful. It is also thebridge to one of the most powerful metamagic feats: Persistant Spell.

Ah yes the 24th level wizard with a Persistant Time Stop.... :D

Obviously you wont take that feat until you are high in levels though.

A persistant Detect Magic is well worth a 4th level slot.

You are right and I am wrong. :(

I always think of the big guns first.

Your not wrong, a persistant Time Stop would be a game breaker. It's just that no one ever points out the simple utility spells like detect magic with this feat. Imagine casting it and just walking through a city to see who has magic, and who doesn't. It would be priceless for an Arcane trickster who actualy was a thief.

You can't Persist Time Stop, it's duration is effectively instantaneous, and thus can't be Persisted.

Extend Spell (PHB, +1)+++ - good for buffing or summoning spells
Empower Spell (PHB, +2)+++ - for buffing or damage spells, like Searing Light
Silent Spell (PHB, +1)++ - mainly for Dispel Magic
Reach Spell (DoF, +2)++ - for ranged cure/inflict spells or Slay Living, Harm/Heal
Still Spell (PHB, +1)++ - good if you're grappled
Heighten Spell (PHB, +x)++ - To raise the DC of your Spells, e.g. Hold Person, Halt Undead...
Sanctum Spell (DoF, +0)++ - for NPCs, DC +1
Quicken Spell (PHB, +4)+ - Harm + Quickened Inflict Moderate Wounds...
Persistent Spell (FRCS, +4)++ - Questionable Ruling, good for many spells, like Detect Thoughts, Detect Magic, Divine Favor, Detect Evil...

Not metamagic, but very useful:
Spell Girding (FRCS)++ - Make your spells harder to dispel (DC +2)

Extend Spell has my vote.

Followed through by Persistent Spell.

I'm a bit leary of Quicken Spell, unless you know you are only going to face one big encounter. It ties down a high level spell slot, and can't be transferred to scroll. At +4 spell levels it doesn't come cheap.

You can get almost the same effect with Repeat Spell, and it only costs +3 spell levels. It requires a bit more forethought, but can be effectively combined with Summoning Monster spells, and transfers to scrolls.
