Metamagics

How about a system where you spent a feat, chose a spell and you now cast that spell better. The spell itself doesn't take up any more resource than before, but you had to spend a whole feat for a single spell improvement. So a real specialist might dump 5 feats into fireball and cast the best fireballs ever, but another wizard might spend their 5 feats to make slight improvements that affect all their spells, like spell focus and spell penetration did for 3E.

But under a variant spell slot system, they could work very well. Say, instead of having a fifth level spell slots, you instead had a bunch of generic spell slots and a fifth level spell required five of them.

Isn't that just another name for a spell point system that requires a number of points equal to spell level to cast? (Nothing wrong with it at all; I've toyed with the idea actually)

Yes it is, though instead of spending points to cast a spell, you spend them to prepare a spell.

Honestly, though, I don't think it's the right answer. The versatility gained isn't worth the added work in spell prep.

I like the idea of thing like metamagic, where characters can have the ability to improve and enhance spells beyond simply getting better spells. I was a big fan of the Metamagic for Spell-like Ability feats with my 3.5E Warlock character. That system, where you could use spell-like abilities as much as you wanted, but could improve them in various ways a limited number of times per day, was a lot of fun.

I'd like to see more metamagic like effects be folded in as properties of spells themselves. Something like how you can use some metamagic effect to boost a spell, but the actual effect depends on what the spell is. Like, for example, a fireball spell description may contain text like "when boosted by metamagic, all targets are lit on fire." Of course, I have an overall preference for having spells upgrade and evolve in interesting ways, rather than just scale or be replaced by newer spells.

I also like the idea of metamagics, but would like to bake in some ability to achieve them without additional mechanics. For example, being able to "overcast" -- 50% extra effect for using a higher level spell slot, or "undercast" -- 50% less effect by using a lower level spell slot, all without using feats.
