MIC - Runestaves

How about creating your own? I've got a player wanting to take the feat and I'm wondering how lenient people have been as far as putting spells together for the staves. Craft staff isn't really a wonderful feat to begin with so...

The guidelines in the MIC say staves should have between 2 and 5 spells on them, yet many of the staves in the book do not follow this guideline. Some, such as the staff of power, do not appear to have any theme either. Considering how cheap it is to add lower level spells to a runestaff it gives a ton of versatility if there is not some cap.

Why can't Divine casters use Runestaves?

'Cause the book specifies arcane spellcasters. ;)

More seriously, I suspect that runestaves are an attempt at leveling the playing field between the arcane and divine casters, with respect to spell selection. Divine casters, of course, can choose their spells from their entire spell list, and change them each day. This gives them a flexibility that is impossible to match by arcane casters, who are limited either by their spellbook or by their spells known. Runestaves allow arcanists greater, but still lesser, flexibility while not increasing the total number of spells they can cast.

I think they're neat. :)

Not having MIC, could someone explain Runestaves in a nutshell?

Essentially, gives you another Spell Known (or, rather, Spells Known).

Say you have a Runestaff of Fireball and Wall of Fire. Three times per day, you can substitute a prepared spell or a spell slot 3rd level or higher for Fireball, and three times per day, you can substitute a prepared spell or a spell slot 5th level or higher for Wall of Fire, as long as you're an arcane caster with the spell on your list.

From memory, at least.

Hyp about has it. It's worth noting that you can only be attuned to one runestaff at a time, the choice of which made when you prepare spells/meditate each day.
