Beorn is not a lycanthrope. He is not a werebear as D&D uses the term. He may have similar abilities, but he is not identical.

He is not portrayed as having any special immunities. His ability is not portrayed as tied to the cycles of the moon. His ability cannot be infective. He is not a "lycanthrope" in the D&D sense of the term.

6. Delete damage reduction.

Actually some DR is implied in the Hobbit. Unfortuatly I can't find my copy of the Hobbit but at the battle of five armies Beorn wades into the mob og goblins and Tolkien remarks "No Weapon seemed to touch him" Sounds like DR to me :D

I've just had an epiphany. A very good argument can be made for Beorn's having been an experienced druid. Bear form? Wild shape. Intelligent horse and sheep servents? Awaken Animal. "No weapon seemed to touch him?" Mad buffs. Beorn sneakily following the dwarves and Bilbo? Unless I'm mistaken, Hide and Mov Sil are on the druid skill list. He was size Large at the time, which explains why Bilbo saw him but didn't hear him (penalty to Hide but not Mov Sil). I don't think he WAS a druid, but it's a neat idea anyway.
