Midkemia d20

So, on Midkemia.com there is an over two year old message about a possibility of a d20 version of Raymond Feist's Midkemia being produced. After repeated attempts to contact through their contact info, and no response, I'm just wondering if anyone here has any info?

I've asked about it before, but from what I understand, Feist has a hate on for D20 or something, and it won't happen. I think they were determined to either build their own system, or go with another one, and it hasn't happened in like 15 years.

I love the novels, but really wish he'd just go ahead with a D20 licensed version. Outside of that possibility, I highly doubt we'll ever see the RPG..unless you want to count some of the old books they wrote back in the early 80's.

I've e-mailed them about it a few times as well, but nobody ever responds.

They should just do an issue of Dragon on the setting. It's already a pretty good match for D&D anyway--a bit about how magic is different, and adding in a handful of new races and monsters, and you'd be all set.

And Valheru. Getting stats for those would be so cool.

I've always figured on using the stats from the Asaatthi in place of the Pantathean Serpent People. Not sure about the Saaur. Maybe advanced, large-sized lizardfolk?

A Dragon mag would whet the whistle, definitely.

I am pretty convinced that the primary obstacle, the magic system, isn't as much of a problem as they think. There are so many optional magic systems for the game, I'm sure one of them could work. I think the primary difference would be the distinction between Greater and Lesser Path magicians. How to simulate that?

Maybe Lesser Path magicians would be more like some sort of blend between an enchanter/illusionist and an Eberron Artificer, whereas the Greater Path magicians would use something like the True Sorcery D20 rules?

I haven't seen any of the old supplements. I've heard of them, but I think they were out before I ever started gaming.

Heck, I always thought with 3e that the split between Wizard and Sorcerer, having to read and study the material as opposed to innate ability, was pretty simple solution. Spell lists would all have to be tweaked thought.

I thought that lesser path magicians tended to use magic through objects, and their spells tended to be less flashy, whereas greater path magicians had the direct energy attack spells, but not as much experience with items....something like that?

I was involved in a discussion on the WotC boards that went pretty far on the topic, but I can no longer find the link.

I would buy it and play it if it was D20. Not bothering with any non-d20 games right now. Old and set in my ways I guess.

Last I knew, the plan was to design their own system. And the issue wasn't so much with d20, as it was with the OGL -- the publishers (perhaps wisely) didn't want to risk opening up any content unique to Midkemia for use by others, as doing so would arguably dillute the IP.

I can't really see much point in developing a whole new system for Midkemia. The world existed as an RPG/D&D setting first, and Feist's work is very much post-D&D-style fantasy. Someone with Feist's resources should be able to get a good lawyer who can guide them in the art of releasing an OGL/d20STL product that doesn't mess with Midkemia's IP.

"Midkemia's IP" is even a funny phrase to me, given how much Midkemia borrows from D&D (not to mention Tolkien) and Kelewan borrows from Tekumel. I found the characters far more unique than the world.

I agree with J-Dawg that you could cover things pretty well with a Dragon article. A whole new system would likely end up being another fantasy hearbreaker that collects dust on a shelf.
