Midnight: Shadow of the Gods - Chapter 1

Evarus rouses slowly at first, blinking sleep from his heavy eyelids as he half-rises. He opens his mouth to ask what's going on, but his question is answered for him soon enough. As quickly as he can, he rummages around for a weapon, one of the daggers he keeps with him. If only he could remember where he put the silly thing...

Chapter 1 - Scene 1.6

Armigil's shot is helped by the fact that the Orc charges him straight on, and the arrow flies true, burying itself in the brute's thigh. Obviously in a rage, the creature continues forward, bringing its wicked, jagged edged blade down towards the Dorn, but the aim is off and the blade clangs against stone just to the left of the Wildlander.

In the camp, elves, dwarf, human and dworg all scramble to get their weapons. Arunae begins to cast his spell, and Evarus's hand finds the dagger, barely managing to find the right end to grasp first. Morthik looks around, sees one of the orcs nearby and charges with a war cry. In comparison, Keelosh, also moving fast, is completely silent as he moves towards the one engaged by Armigil.

OOC Note: I said no one has armor on. That applies only to those sleeping. Armigil of course is fully clad. :) Below is a description of what the characters can see:

About 100 feet to the East of the camp, Armigil is facing off against an Orc in greasy, muddy leather with a large vardatch (jagged edged blade). A bit further away, and 'south', is an Orc with a drawn bow, just turning from the outcropping. Another orc is flanking the outcropping from the north, about the same distance away. Only one feline can be seen on the outcropping, growling at the orc that fired an arrow at it. Please let me know general intent and actions (after however long of a pose you wish :) ), I will run combat until something occurs that needs input (including the arrival of new combatants).

With the orc in proximity, Armigil backs up from his crouch, throws off his cloak and drops his bow in one smooth motion. Then, eyes ahead watchfully, unblinking, he reaches to his back for the sword strapped there. Time to fight in close quarters.

After a moment's hesitation in the rush and panic of the sudden battle, Evarus looks around for an enemy that doesn't seem to be looking in his direction. Given time to plan a route that might afford him the most cover, he crouches down and moves as quietly -- and more importantly, unnoticeably -- as possible. He holds his dagger low, his fingers flexing against the hilt the only outward sign that he's at all nervous about trying to sneak up on an orc.

[sblock=OOC Note]If the terrain doesn't appear to give me much of a chance to sneak up on anyone/anything (or if the orcs would very obviously see me), then I'll stick close to someone bigger and meaner than me and take advantage of any opportunities to stick a dagger in an orc.[/sblock]

Chapter 1 - Scene 1.7

OOC Note: To simplify, I'm breaking up the battle into three areas, the North, Central and South.

As the camp erupts with activity, most seem to have found their weapons and begin to move towards the Orcs.

Round 1

North: This Orc seems to be the closest, and Evarus moves through the tall grass in an attempt to get behind it. Morthik, eschewing any subtlety, continues to move towards the same Orc, and its obvious the beast is focusing on the more immediate threat as it rushes forward, swinging a hand axe at the dwarf. The attack misses as Morthik instinctually ducks the slash. Arunae tosses the branch he cast a spell on, the branch now glowing brightly enough that when it lands between the northmost Orc and the one that Armigil is fighting, both can be seen more easily. Additionally, it reveals another Orc coming around from the outcropping, crossbow nocked and looking for a target.

Central: Armigil gets up from his crouch, drawing his short sword. His opponent responds with another mighty hack with his vardatch, but again is off on his aim. Keelosh is still a bit away, but probably will be able to attack in the next flurry of blows, and Danyd appears to be about to engage as well. One of the elves moves from the camp, long bow being nocked and appearing ready to fire at the orc.

South: Gac leaves the camp in much the same fashion as Evarus. Quickly, but staying low. Of course, he's closer to the ground, so disappears into the grass and out of sight. Eliael and another elf appear to be moving towards the southernmost Orc. Suddenly the sound of horses running comes to everyone's ears, and four shapes streak around to the south. Beyond them comes the harsh sound of another Orc, and the twang of a crossbow bolt being shot. No other sound comes, possibly indicating that whoever fired missed.

Round 2

North: The Orc standing nearer to the outcropping fires a bolt at Morthik, and the shot is true, puncturing the dwarf's armor near his shoulder. The wound doesn't prevent Morthik's strike with his Urutuk hatchet from landing, cutting deep into the Orc he's engaged with, leaving a bleeding gash in his foe's side. Evarus in the meantime has managed to successfully slip up behind the same Orc, and tries to swipe with his dagger, but the motion of the Orc as it tried to unsuccessfully evade Morthik's blow does allow it to unknowingly move away from the swipe, and Evarus hits only air. Two elves nearer to the camp release arrows, one hitting the same Orc, and Arunae casts a spell with an almost vicious growl, certainly uncharacteristic for the otherwise soft spoken elf, and a yellow streak of light shoots from his hand to the beast. Staggered, the Orc appears ready to fall. A loud growl from the direction of the outcropping is followed by a fluid shape leaping from the pile of rocks at the Orc further back who had shot Morthik with a crossbow bolt. The cat apparently had decided it had had enough of this. The Orc goes down in a heap, screaming. The screams soon stop.

Central: This area ends up being nothing but a flurry of badly missed blows. Armigil, Keelosh and Danyd all miss terribly with their sword, vardatch and short bow attacks. The Orc returns the favor but swinging over Armigil's head. What doesn't miss though is the second cat... the one that had disappeared from the outcropping, as it pounces from behind the Orc, taking it down and beginning to rend with claws and teeth. It's over quickly and the animal raises its head, staring straight at Armigil.

South: Eliael's voice is heard, a cry of pain as a bolt from the Orc she's facing off from a distance goes through her arm. Her pain is echoed by the Orc, although more gutturally, when the elf that accompanied her sends an arrow into its thigh. The Gnome is still nowhere to be seen. Looking around, seeing two of its comrades down and another teetering on his feet as it faces Morthik, Evarus and three elves, the creature turns to flee. Further off in the distance, the riders see the Orc in front of them bolt away. It does little good, being run down and having its head removed by a strike from the lead rider.

OOC Note (Positions after two rounds):

As the situation has changed greatly, I'll request new actions from people.

Morthik and Orc 1 (Northernmost) are locked in melee. Orc 1 appears to have some of the glowing yellow substance fired in the spell by Arunae still burning away at its throat. Evarus is behind it and three elves, including Arunae are a distance away. Orc 1 appears pretty much done. One of the cats is finishing tearing the body of the Orc it killed about 50 feet away. The second cat is standing over the body of the Orc that had been attacking Armigil and is now staring directly at the Dorn Wildlander. Danyd and Keelosh are with him. To the South, one of the Orcs (Orc 2) is fleeing from Eliael and the elf with her. There are apparently horsemen further away to the south. No one in the party is down although both Eliael and Morthik have been hit by crossbow bolts.

Masozi, I will assume that you got off your horse before it engaged the orc still in the shadows to the south. You can see the final orc running away from the Sarcosan riders before it dies to one of their swords. You're closest to the Cat/Armigil/Keelosh/Danyd standoff and the Orc (2) running away from the battle.

No blinks. Scarce breath. Armigil slowly lowers his sword, keeping his gaze on the eyes of the feline and nowhere else. Carefully, watching the animal for signs of anger, aggression or movement, the Dorn Wildlander begins to lower himself in a crouch to bring his eyes to the same level as the large cat. There is, in Armigil, no sign of fear, only caution and respect for the creature he faces.

Evarus stands, dagger at the ready but making no movement to attack the orc nearby. He is wide-eyed, watching the surreal effects of the spell Arunae cast on their enemy. The sudden ferocity of battle, waking from a dead sleep and general confusion of the scene seems to have him a little dumbfounded.

With feet now on solid ground Masozi has little time to survey her surroundings before spotting the orc heading in her direction. Her dark eyes pass only briefly over the large cat and the others involved in the fight before she choses her opponent, the one she knows for sure to be worth an effort, the orc running in her direction. She reaches for her bow and draws an arrow, aiming for the beast.

Chapter 1 - Scene 1.8

OOC Note: Continuing my pattern from before, I'll break the action into North, Central and South.

Round 3

North: The Orc further back by the encampment is unmoving as the large cat leaps back to the outcropping, hissing generally at those combatants closest. None however is now close enough for it to leap upon easily. The one which Arunae hit with the spell is still standing, but not for long as Morthik brings the axe straight down onto the Orc's head, with all the attendant damage that such a blow against a stunned opponent would do. The Orc falls to the ground, twitching.

Central: Keelosh tenses as if ready to strike at the cat, but notices the attention it pays Armigil, and holds up a hand apparently to halt any arrows that might come from the elf or Danyd, both of whom have switched their aim to the animal. The cat's tail lashes, but it doesn't go into the crouch which comes before its pounce. After a moment of staring at the tall Dorn, the cat suddenly turns with a last low rowrl and moves back towards the outcropping with an almost disdainful flick of its tail.

South: The Gnome, Gac, had disappeared almost immediately but had apparently found his way behind the Orc which decided to flee. It takes a slash to the leg as it tries to run past the Gnome, hobbling it. Arrows converge from Eliael who, having shaken off the pain of the bolt still proturuding from her arm, manages to hit the creature, and Masozi, who's aim is also true. The Orc falls, barely breathing and bleeding profusely.

Post Combat

The sound of horse's hooves come again, and the three remaining riders pull up a distance away, near Masozi, and about the same distance from Eliael and her elf companion, and the group near the center of the battlefield. The scent of the cats obviously has the horses antsy as they whinny and keep their rolling eyes on the outcropping, but the riders manage to control them. The cats for their part seem, if not content with all the creatures in their immediate vicinity, at least not aggressive with none of the humanoids currently moving in their direction.

One of the figures, speaking loudly in Erenlander says:

"We are on an errand against the Foul One. Are you friend or foe?"

In High Elvish, another figure says:

"We bring one sent by Aradil on an errand against the Shadow in the North. Are you a friend of the Queen?"

The horses have stopped within range of the light, and it can be seen that two of the riders are tall, dark, slender men, likely Sarcosans from the south. The other rider is small, not quite as dark, and the pointed ears indicate that he is likely of the same race of elves as Arunae. This elf's address is directed at Eliael, and appears less challenging than the Sarcosan's, almost as if repeating a variation on a standard greeting to one known as an ally.

OOC Notes:

Masozi can easily see that many, at least half, in the group that were fighting the orcs are elves.

Of the five Orcs that the party encountered, only one appears to be still breathing, the one between Masozi and Eliael. Its breaths are coming in very ragged gasps.

For those interested, the cat facing off against Armigil was Unfriendly instead of Hostile, due to being able to see him fighting against one of the creatures that smelled like the ones that had come nearest to the outcropping. The result of the roll against Animal Empathy resulted in the cat becoming indifferent.
