...Midnight?

Hmmm...

At a first glance, it resembles LotR a lot...

Going to read further...

BTW, those were some real fast replies.

Midnight won the ENny for best Campaign Setting for a reason. It is quiet simply the best I have ever seen.

The book is georgeous and the writing is top notch. It sets the tone througout the entire thing.

Also of note, it conatins a completly reword magic system that is absolutely wonderful. I am loath to go back to D&D's standard system after playing Midnight.

Yes, it has some very obvious Tolkien influences, but once you get into it, you will find that it can very much stand on it's own.

Hm, since instant update seems to be the thing here... here goes...

I've read a couple of the excerpts on the main site, and it does indeed seem like a rather nice setting, detailed, and flavourful. I'll try to do some more reading tomorrow.

It definitely is tolkienesque, to say the least. The whole "shadow rising in the north", numbered ages, and the rest made me chuckle a bit.
Of course, this doesn't have to have any effect on the quality of the setting itself.

And I am a bit intrigued by the whole heroic blood thing going on (I saw the feyblood blurb in one of the excerpts).

Unfortunately, this wouldn't work with my party. Wouldn't work at all.

In any case, thanks for the info, guys.

Midnight is properly a d20 rather than D&D setting in many ways. It chucks almost all the classes, the magic system, the races aren't really compatible with other races from outside the core system (or, they aren't without making ECL +1) and the heroic paths are a further power boost. At the end of the day, the pumped races and heroic paths somewhat make up for the lack of D&D style ubiquitous magic, but it still plays very differently.

Of course, to me, that's a really good thing...

I have to agree, for once :D

Midnight has a lot of Tolkein influence, but only superficially.

In my own very subjective opinion, Midnight is the best setting I've ever read.

You can add me to the fanatics of Midnight rallying under Ashrem's banner. Even though I can't stand Tolkien's work (I know, a fantasy gamer disliking him is blasphemy), I love Midnight. There's no doubt where they got their inspiration from, but they did some good work with it.

Despite the fact they draw on one the oldest fantasy sources available, the setting is a breath of fresh air.

It's somewhat surprising to me that I see so much praise for Midnight here on the boards but there is only one review (and not by any EN staff reviewers) of the Midnight setting here at ENWorld.

Why don't more of you who love Midnight write reviews of it? Why hasn't a staffer reviewed it, if it is the "best campaign ever?"

Just curious.

I'm not sure why no review has been written here at EnWorld.. odd. Ther e is a review over my site, http://www.againsttheshadow.org. Take a look over there, you will also find tons of fan material for use in a Midnight game. Some of it is written by Wil Upchurch, one of the Midnight Designers...

Thanks for the pimp, Emi.

Yeah, Midnight is a well-wrought world with really interesting alternate classes that help create the feel of the setting.

I don't believe it was a WOTC Setting Competition nominee but the author did have a setting make it to the final 11 and that will be published soon.

Please do check out the web site. Some of the articles there were written by me and I'm kinda proud of 'em.

Please post if and when you pick it up, what you think.
