Mike Mearls: Build your Adventures in OD&D

Wouldn't the world be a great place if we were all blessed with 'superior' DMs and 'superior' players? :)

see one, do one, teach one.

superior referees and players aren't born. they are made.

i have been in the teaching side of this for years now. but i am still up for seeing and doing.

I agree. But there is a school of thought, that the 'ideal' adventure doesn't provide a plot. The plot is what is created by the players.

I think it's got something to do with this sandbox-thingy I keep reading about... ;)
I think that school of thought is just an overreaction to the term "plot". The presence of some kind of internally consistant narrative that ties all of the locations and creatures described in the adventure together doesn't automatically equate to a railroad, nor does it exclude the possibility of sandbox style adventuring. It merely tells the DM what the starting conditions are and gives a baseline for what will happen sans interference or interaction by the PCs.

Download the adventure Spider Farm by Papers&Paychecks from Dragonsfoot if you want to see what I'm talking about. It's a great sandbox style adventure, with a plot, by someone who really understands what sandbox style adventuring is about.

It's a good philosophy, and one that I've pretty much tried to follow for everything I've ever GMed. Get an idea in your head of what you want to run, think of what'll be cool, and look for rules to fill in later.
