D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Isn't Mearls developing his own game these days? I'd take any statements about 5th edition being "ruined" with a grain of salt.

Up to a point sure.

His observations are matching a lot of comments here and elsewhere.

The "5E is fine crowd" and WotC glazers push back instinctively. They dont believe people when they say XYZ can do this.

Until they see it in play.

See comments around chromatic orb for example we crunched it out in great detail and yeah it beats fireball unless that fireball is hitting a large amount of targets.

Alot are not playing, barely playing or not DMing s theyre not really getting the same experience.

Behind the screen im seeing how low wisdom saves are. Intelligence saves are even worse.

You could probably build a character around 3 or 4 spells and not cast anything else except cantrips. At least combat spells utility, healing etc always good.

he is, he also left WotC, which means he can talk about these things much more openly. You will have to decide which of the two is the reason for him being more active now. I'd say he would not talk about and address things in his design that he does not consider problematic however.

Pretty sure he could find some other topic if all he wanted was to be in the conversation for marketing purposes

My opinion is a tad more nuanced than that. I think most of these issues are only problems for certain tables with certain types of players. If you happen to run into those players, you'll see them as problems, and if you don't, you won't. And there's no way to player-proof any RPG, so no matter what rules you come up with, there will always be some players who use them in ways that aren't fun for anyone else at the table. I would put down money that this will even be true of Mearls' own game, when he finishes it. As such, "5E is ruined" is being overdramatic at best.

Kinda but even casuals will often figure things out fast by simple observation.

One player starts using command everyone else does.

Ah the old "if you don't agree with me that this game is bad, you're a insert derogatory statement". There's enough social division and "us vs. them" in the world, can't we spare our hobby from it too?

No game is absolutely perfect. I won't deny that 5e has some problems. But my friends and I find that the good outweighs the bad. Or we make house rules to address what we cannot ignore.

What's the derogatory comment?

People have gone through the MM and added up all the saves, resistances, and immunities etc.

That's why I know targeting intelligence saves is generally the best save to target.

Constitution is generally the worst.

If you play older editions espicially along side 5E you'll start noticing differences.

Very low saves have been known about since the playtest with the Ghouls.
