Mimic Cohort?

So, a friend of mine has a rogue, who has taken a STRONG liking to a mimic i created.

Now, mimics have low but human intelligence, so they can reason, have a personality, and think, even if their thoughts are a little one-dimensional. "Gold. More gold? This will get me gold."


He wants to take the Leadership feat, and take the mimic along as a cohort, bribing it with gold as they go.


Most possible cohorts have information on "__blank__ as characters" in their entry in the monster manual.

What racial modifiers would you give mimics?
-ability modifiers
-skill modifiers
-misc modifiers

What I'm having trouble with is the mimic is a large creature that cannot alter its size. It also has a speed of 10 ft. Now, if you'll let it become a wagon or a cart, that'd be fine because then it can move at the speed of one (assuming the party pulls it with horses or pushes it themselves).

In combat, it'd be interesting to see what the thing will do. Not many monsters are going to go after it while fighting if it's sitting there as a chest.

It would be great for ambushes though.

I'd say, based on other cohort levels, that it'd be about a level 8 equivalent.

I would also say handwave it as a DM and let him have it as a story device. No need to spend the feat for a subpar cohort during combat, imho. But, if you go with the wagon idea and somebody tries to "steal" from it, then totally require the feat so it can fight back.

Mimic :: d20srd.org shows the typical mimics stats are Str 19, Dex 12, Con 17, Int 10, Wis 13, Cha 10 so it shouldnt have a problem befriending your Rogue.

Being followed in the wilderness/dungeon is fine, however the larger problem (sorry) is your rogue is going to find it more difficult to be stealthy in many town situations bc how often do you see someone being followed by a roughly 5'x5'x6' object? Granted, enchanting it with a Magical Aura might help ... provided the townsfolk are willing to wait for their respected wizard to confirm your cover story about it being an animated chest/statue/etc rather than simply burning you for being a witch/whatnot.
