Mind Blank and Telepathic Bond = The Uninformed Barbarian?

Joker

First Post
Our resident wizard has been giving Mind Blank to our resident barbarian. He also casts Rary's Telepathic Bond on everyone in the party.

Does this mean that the barbarian no longer benefits from the Telepathic Bond? What about Sending?

Mind Blank has no effect on Telepathic Bond.

This spell protects against all mind-affecting spells and effects as well as information gathering by divination spells or effects.

Telepathic Bond is neither of those.

Well, it also protects against spells that read thoughts... which, arguably, Telepathic Bond does at the receiving end...

Is it "mind reading" as much as it could be seen as "mind sending"? Using Bond, you have to make a concious effort to make your mind heard over the spell. People just don't go poking into your mind with the spell, rather the thoughts you actively speak in your mind and mean to be heard are sent out like on a radio set where only your friends have the code for it and can respond.

I wouldn't consider it mind-reading. Hence, I don't think Mindblank would nerf it.

In my opinion, Mind Blank is the mental version of the Antimagic Field. While it protects you from any form of mental contact, even from a Wish spell, it cannot see the difference between beneficent and harmful spells. It simply blocks all mental 'intrusions' like some firewall. Also note that no form of scrying works when you try to detect a Mind Blanked creature. As if he simply has ceased to exist. While the spell description doesn't say explicitly that Telepathic Bond will not work I felt that it was in the spirit of the spell to disallow all forms of telepathic contact. A Sending would work if the barbarian could do the sending, but he wouldn't be able to receive anything, as a Demand spell would also be blocked. Perhaps a Telepathic Bond could work one way, enabling the barb to send but not to receive. But there is also the question whether the wizard could target him with TB to start with, as MB wouldn't allow any contact to be established, the spell could be blocked without any effect. Following my reasoning, the barb's mind would simply 'not exist' for the TB to take effect on.

Using Telepathic Bond is like speaking; you are dispersing information, not gathering it. I would rule that Mind Blank protects against information gathering (like Detect Thoughts) but would not interfere with information dispersal (like Telepathic Bond).

 I'm sorry I just find it incredibly amusing that a wizard would actively seek to form a mental bond with a primitive, unwashed, barbaric, er, barbarian.

But you can't use Telepathic Bond to send information to just anyone, only to the person on the other end of the Bond. So the spell has both a dispersing and a gathering component.

Does Mind Blank prevent me from understanding the protected target with the Tongues spell, too, since I could gather informations by speaking with him or her?
