Mind flayer tentacle arrangement?

How are mind-flayer tentacles arranged?

  • In a "diamond" pattern (1-2-1) like the MM picture.

Though I personally would not allow good mind flayers, I see no problem in allowing them to eat brains...as long as they were not attacking people just to get their brains. Beware of paladin mind flayers "hey, that guy is evil! I'm going to eat his brain!"

I say it varies from DM to DM. Heres my question about ilithids, what do good ones eat? The brains of the evil?

I'd allow a good illithid. It would be evil to eat brains because it's their form of sustenance (as long as they aren't going around killing innocents for their brain supply).

I wouldn't allow a good one except maybe in an Eberron setting. Then it might be kinda cool.

Do mindflayers always have four tentacles? I kinda like the idea that they can have anywhere from 3-6 tentacles in different sizes and formations.

Illithids have four tentacles.
Ulitharids, or noble illithids, have six tentacles. They're also tallers.

Also, psionic illithids have a squid-like beak, while arcane illithids have a lamprey-like mouth. Or the reverse, I'm not sure.

According to their stats, yes, they only have 4; changing the amound might change their combat effectiveness, but there's no reason not to scare the pc's with some 11-tentacled monstrosity that only attacks with 4.

. I think in some 2ed suppliment there was a "somethingthid" (forget what it was called) that had 6 tentacles and was more powerful.

How about something with lots of small tentacles, but only 4 big "attacking" tentacles? That would be pretty freaky looking.

I said Square because there was no trapezoids formation option.

Exactly, I've always seen them as having two above the mouth and two along side the mount so the two above the mouth are much closer together. Thus a trapezoid.

I chose diffent shapes and such because I figure that might one of the ways they tell each other apart, something of their appearance. Of course maybe they have different brain wave pattens to do that, much like some people have brown eyes and others have glowing green ones.

Well... no option for "does it really matter" so...I will pick diamond, or roughly diamond (perhaps the two side ones a bit lower so that the bottom 3 are somewhat closer together). In the past we played them as having only three as, to us anyway, it seemed that a bottom tentacle would just be in the way.
