Miniatures and Figurines

I bought a little pack of poker chips -- they work great. I wrote on the yellow and white ones with permanent marker (used letters on one color and numbers on another). I actually haven't gotten around to using the blue or red ones. But I could see using them as minions in a 4E game.

I bought a large bag of plastic farm animals at the 99 cent store and we used them to represent the army of undead that the DM sent against us. Then I got to the level in the Bard's Tale with the undead farm animals and cracked up laughing.

I've used fiery dragon counters alot, and I like to put some sticky tack on the bottom, and then affix the mini to a glass bead or coin for weight. Works well, and the added height from the bead allows me to pick it up to move it if I want to.

Gamesworkshop, or other minature bases, could be used, to glue the minis to in an upright position, or poker chips or whatever:

take a base and a card token, plus glue, some dowelling or matchsticks, maybe something to stiffen the token for support (like clear plastic)

ideally the card should be stiff, but you could glue some clear plastic to the token, for an upright support to add stiffness.
for example, maybe a margarine tub lid that's clear plastic, cut a bit out of it, and glue ot the token.
A simple strip or square of clear plastic is ok, you don't need to match the token's shape. You just want clear plastic for support as cardboard or card token will get damaged too easily.

To fix the token to the base, you want some support, hence matchstick or dowelling.
White glue is ideal, you can also use Epoxy if wish for more strength/faster drying.
having two matchsticks or larger items glued along the bottom of the token, adds support, then glue it to the base.

an "L" shape piece of plastic or the like is even better support on bottom of the token.
I used to buy specific plastic strips, like girders ("I" or "H" beams) from a model shop, normally used ot make model bridges etc, great for supports on many other things.

I made a Lord of the Rings chess set, with such plastic used to build Minis Tirith, Helms Deep, BaraDur and Isengard, and the old, great Mithril minis for other pieces :)

Honestly? Go to Hobby Lobby, Michael's, or any other craft store.

You'll be amazed at all the crap therein which you can use as minis.

I've made great use out of bags of flattened glass beads, each about a half-inch in diameter. They're goblins, kobolds, spell effects, walls, pretty much whatever. Cheap, too.
