Miniatures terrain

I've never used terrain before. I'm curious how much time is generally need at the gaming table to set up and take down encounters you're using it for. I'd be concerned about breaking up the flow of the game.

In my case I only use my stuff at home, and I have a big house, and an even bigger garage (yes, my garage is bigger than my house, my house is 1600 sq feet), so when I am using my FD stuff I set up the scenarios on boards, and place them around my bedroom. When its time for a given scene I go get it and set it down on the table. So the disruption is similar to the time I would typically have spent drawing it out in dry erase,or whatever.

The added visual impact is very worth the disruption, every time.

I set it all up ahead of time, and then do one of two things.

Take it back down if it is just a few pieces that I can easily rebuild.

Cover it up with something and uncover as I go, or move the set ups to another part of the room and then bring them up.

The biggest delays are usually after a big, big battle. But, we usually decompress somewhat and use the facilities or get something to eat anyway while I re-set things.

With outdoor, non-specific locations, just throwing out a few pieces and deciding it looks good can take less time than trying to draw something on a battlemat. Flipmats are good for this, too, but are not 3D, of course.

Indoor locations can take some time to set up but so does drawing indoor locations with wet or dry erase markers, and cleaning up aftrer is often just as time consuming.

It's hard to beat the reaction and immersion level one adds from 3D terrain even if you only use a little to augment 2D drawings and maps.

I want DF so bad, but i'm hesitant to plunk down that much money. I know i would need multiple sets, and knowing myself, i would get addicted immediately. I like the Fat Dragon stuff, but i'm lazy and i don't like having to cut that stuff out and put it together.

Recently, i've been making lots of my own terrain with air dry clay, paint and wooden blocks. Works well enough when coupled with a good gridded map. Still, i got to upgrade one these days...
