[MiniHB] The Havoc Mage

Don't have the book in front of me at the moment, but I remember than the first level ability of the Havoc Mage is that you can "As a full round action, make a single attack and then cast a spell" (again, not a direct quote). The important part is the order, in which it specifies an attack and THEN cast a spell. Should I take this as written, or is it reasonable to assume you could switch the order up? Meaning I could cast a spell and then attack (ie True Strike and attack)?

Yeah, the True Strike + Power Attack is a cool idea. But so is tossing a fireball at foes at a distances as you melee with the closer enemy.

Edit: Follow-up question I just thought of. What if the spell you want to cast is a full round action, or longer?

Certainly, and for that, it doesn't even matter which one you do first.

Sorry, didn't see that until after I had started my post (editing does that sometimes):

You can't Battlecast any spell above level 2 or that has a casting time above 1 standard action. Eventually, you can Battlecast up to 8th-level spells, but still only standard action or lower casting time.

True. In fact, I've even learned something fun in the D&D Miniatures rules (not sure if it applies to D&D itself, though): attacks in a full attack can be made in any order you want. (In DDM, that's very important for ranged attacks, as you're otherwise forced to attack the closest enemy, so this lets you use the weakest iterative attacks against fodder to clear the way for your best attack against the strongest enemy.)

In D&D, this lets you get rid of a low-level body guard (skeleton, goblin, etc.) then move 5 feet and attack the BBEG with your full BAB.
