Mithril and Masterwork

Actually, the DMG doesn't state it clearly. The only thing it states is that special materials are considered masterwork for creation times and that this doesn't affect armor check penalty or attack bonus.

It is possible to conclude that this means they are considered masterwork for all purposes, or that this means they take just as long to make as a masterwork item (i.e. use a value of +200 gp to determine creation time instead of the actual value of the material).

The text in the DMG only covers creation time. Technically, I believe that you would still need to make them masterwork before you enchant them. The entry in the FAQ supports that reading of the rules.

And where is the proof to back that statement up?

From the SRD on Mithral:Weapons or armors fashioned from mithral are treated as masterwork items with regard to creation times, but the masterwork quality does not affect the enhancement bonus of weapons or the armor check penalty of armor.

There ye go. It's also in the DMG, but I don't have the book on me to give a page number.

Nowhere. We made it up. It's a great intricate conspiracy that comes straight down from the highest seats of power and reaches into the very lives of every man, woman, and child on this planet, and they're all aligned against you. :D

I'm waiting for the right moment.

In this particular case, I knew it would only piss him off, even though it might be funny to others. In other words, the situation was already bad enough that I figured adding more fuel to the fire wasn't necessary. Those feats of mine tend to add gallons. :)

Okay how about the fact that all examples of enhanced weapons made of special material have always been priced without any MW cost? (Examples include the Antimagic Armor and the Warlord's Breastplate. If there were a MW cost, there would be a 50 in the last two digits of the cost because MW for armor is 150.)

This is another example of letter of the rules versus what was intended by the designers.

It may well be possible to put MW on these items. It would be, however, unnecesary and would not confer any bonuses, and would not be needed to further enhance the item.

One of THOSE things.

Since these items aren't in the DMG, whoever did the write up on them got it wrong. It's easy to do, since that whole section is vaguely worded. Where are they from, anyway?
