I'm shocked that no one's discussing the recent release of Miyazaki's Nausicaa, Porco Rosso, and The Cat Returns on DVD. (Actually, The Cat Returns isn't by Miyazaki, but it's from his company.)
I forgot to mention that they're running a promotion: buy all three and get one of the previous releases (Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service) for free -- via mail-in rebate.

When I bought all three, I found out that they forgot to pack the mail-in coupon in the DVD case. Costco said they'd take care of me though...

Ahhh...Miyazaki. I've seen all of his Ghibli films now, and have to say, they're all amazing. That said though, nothing he has done before or after comes even remotely close to Mononoke Hime. That film is just...amazing. Kind of Nausicaa without the preachiness.

Well crap. I plan to buy the new releases but I already own all of the other DVDs they would give away.

I haven't seen the new Tortoro release around here yet though. All of the others but not that one.

Apparently the original plan was to release Nausica, Roso, & Tortoro. There was evidently a technical problem with the first run of Tortoro DVDs. The Cat Returns was substituted at the last minute and Tortoro will come out later. Probably as part of the next wave of releases.

I recently got a 4 disc set off ebay (yeah probably a rip) with 7 movies on it: Totoro, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Proco Roso, Grave of the Fireflies, Laputa, and Kiki. My wife just ordered Cat's Return and Naussica (my favorite) for me :) we also have Howl's Moving Castle, Mimiosubaseba, and Ponpoko in Japanese only. Yes I am a huge Miyazaki fan and I am glad that his movies are coming to North America.

The Baron from the Cat's Return is actually the cat from Mimiosubaseba and its really cool to see him come back again. It will be nice to see the sub version of the Cat's Return as I have only seen the Japanese version in theaters.

Miyazaki is much larger than Disney in Japan, his movies are the highest grossing films in Japan outstripping any domestic or foreign release by far. Each movie pulls in billions of yen.
