MM2 Excerpt: Ultimate Beholder Tyrant

This guy could be a real nightmare if played correctly.

- Use Central Eye on a PC
- Telekinesis Ray a PC next to the previous ally
- Blast them both with your other eye ray of choice

Now one PC is prone, and the other is slowed & dazed. When either of them starts their next turn they both get to eat another eye ray!

Looks like he could be fun.

He looks like a nightmare to run, too. That's a lot of effects to keep up with. Players will likely be rolling 4 saves or more on their turn, if you play it right.

That's also a lot of abilities to keep in mind when you're running it. Yikes.

The best method is likely to come up with strategies/eye patterns beforehand, rather than just do it on the fly.

Yeah, agreed! I would probably make power cards for each of the beholder's rays too.

We use a large dry erase board for initiative, so I would probably write down all of the effects each PC is suffering under their name for easy reference, ie "On 10 fire, -2 Atk Sv Ends." Pretty complicated though, with all of the aftereffects going on too. If I was gonna run this beast I'd have to plan on it - winging it could get confusing.

Eyes of the Beholder is nasty! Just like the lower-level beholder's aura, but he can choose the eye ray he uses instead of it being randomly selected. This will really screw with the group's plans.

Actually, I think the best way would be to make little note cards for each save effect/after effect.

I'd use postit notes, write up a whole bunch ahead of time,a nd then hand them out as it came down the pike. For every note someone had, they would need to roll a save, and follow the failed/after effect on the card.

Considering the number of saves PCs are making, I think the Ultimate beholder's go-to starting ray would be the Cold Ray; a flat -2 to saves is pretty vicious.

In fact, Cold ray + Unraveling ray is rather nasty.

1st: very complex monsters for those bred with simpler ones like the pit fiend...

2nd: action economy is in favour of the ultimate tyrant no matter how many enemies there are. :)

3rd: push and pull effects will make sure the combat will be very dynamic

4th: no save or die/stun effects and good use of aftereffects

5th: :)

I like it.

To be honest, I relish the idea of a monster with a decent range of options to use in the face of an ever-changing tactical situation. Too many of the MM1 epic monsters are boringly simplistic to my mind.

This guy, I like.

Yeah, he is cool. I do not understand the logic behind the reservation presented in this thread. Just goes to show that beauty is in(deed in) the eye of the beholder. ;)

I was surprised that most (all?) of the eye effects were actually area burst 1s! You really don't want to bunch up, you might be subject to multiple of the eye effects. (And imagine the entire party being hit with a petrifying eye gaze!)
