MM2 Rant

Well, the purpose of a MM is exactly to provide a ton of creatures. That's what a MM is for. I can't see anyone being disappointed for finding exactly what a MM is supposed to contain. It was never meant to be a guide to monster creation, therefore the creatures aren't examples, they are the content.

A book about monster creation could be nice but it should be a separate publication IMO, because the people who like to usually make their own monsters implicitly aren't those who like to have a million premade creatures in a book.

I recently bought the MM2 and after checking it out thoroughly I have to say that I'm just as thoroughly dissapointed. The large amount of save or die type attacks for the higher CR creatures (and even some of the not so high CR's) was a big dissapointment. Personally I find it lazy writing and limits using the creatures as statted to a raise dead game only.

Am I alone in this?

No, I didn't like it either.

I think I agree somewhat on this note. Though there were some neat ideas in MM2 and many of them are challenging, frightening opponents, I don't find that there is the same sort of pure idea content that Creature Collection 2 or Legions of Hell have*. There is little in the MM2 as cool as blood horrors, shackledeaths, skin weavers, bloodless, or conundrum creatures, for example.

* - That is not to say I still don't disagree with Crothian regarding his rating of MM2. Yes, these products are better than the MM2. Those products are merely in the 4-5 range, where the MM2 is perhaps in the 3-4 range, NOT the 2 range!

My problem with both monster manuals is that they are about 20 pages of rules, and 200 pages of examples.

I hear you. A monster book full of monsters. What were they thinking? Dragons, devils, goblins, oozes, death knights, golems, templates. Whatever. Give me something I can actually use in a campaign.

That's fine, I think those better products (CC2 and LoH) are in the 3-4 range myself. But that's the great think about the review section. There are many opinions there and most give a pretty good basis for that opinion.

I'll see those five and raise you ten:

Fiendwurm
Orcwort
Bone Ooze
Death Knight
Chain Golem
Hellfire Wyrm
Myconid
Corpse Gatherer
Leech Walker
Meenlock

I'll take that death knight as ante. As for the rest: put your pennies away! :p
