I thought the swamp ox with the deathray was sort've dorky.

I took the Banshee, and gave her a level drain instead of Save or Die. I'm figuring a good 3 levels per wail sounds good.

The Spellgaunt is just Yummilicious. I don't think I'll throw it at my party, but if I ever did play a HIgh Powered Epic Superstomp, these suckers would definetly get some use. The 'emobilize and eat your stuff'. Yay!

No way. The Catoblepas is a classic (though I admit, the artwork did leave a lot to be desired).

I've noticed this a lot in this thread. And I don't want this to seem like I'm picking on Grazzt with this, he just happened to make me think of it. Many people seem to give this book higher props just becasue they redo creatures that came out 20 years ago. Is that the case? Do people really just want to see updates of all the monsters in the old edition books still on their selves?

Personally, I've been more excited about the new stuff instead of the recycled ideas.

Of course. Its no different than updating all the old classes and spells.

I disagree. I thought the pic in the MM2 was much better than the one in that link. The MM2 really gives it that "so ugly its cool" look.

You're right, and that's no good either. I just perfer seeing new stuff, then rehashed old stuff. I'm more then likely alone in this. Wizards has been doing a good mix of old and new, I'll give them credit for that.

I'd never pick on you. Your my Ace in the whole for a gaming group if I ever have to move to Cleveland (Jokeing of course)

Quality does help the old and new stuff out. I think if it is well done, then few people can complain.

I don't think there's anyone out there who only wants rehashes or only wants new stuff. We all have our favorites from the past, but also get excited about the new. I agree WoTC has been doing a good job of maintaining a balance in the material produced.

"Rehashes"??? 3E versions of monsters from older editions aren't rehashes, they're a good part of what makes D&D D&D. Leave out beholders and you may as well throw out fireballs and long swords too. "Rehashes" indeed.

It makes old material (like stacks of Dungeon magazines) easier to convert, and a lot of the classic monsters are classics for good reason. The catoblepas would be missed as an iconic monster as would the carrion crawler (although the catoblepas is less useful than the crawler), but a bunch of it's peers in the AD&D manuals wouldn't be.

Happily, Tome of Horrors to the rescue.
