(MME) Is it just me...

Admittedly, at 35 my vision is still perfect and I'm one of about 4 people on my mom's side that don't wear glasses, so I'm certain my experience isn't the same as everyone else's. I think it would still be plenty readable if they made things a bit smaller tho and reduced whitespace.

Yeah, it is an odd thing. See, my visual acuity is fine too, barely correctable. It is more a matter of being able to focus, discriminate, etc. You find that reading smaller fonts, text on less contrasty backgrounds, etc just gets harder.

I open my 1e DMG, with its rather undersized body font, and while the page is perfectly clear, reading it is an effort. Reading my 4e DMG OTOH is easy and effortless. Reading the entire 1e DMG would be a chore.

Surely there could be some intermediate approach. I agree that a spacious layout is pleasant, but 4e is, IMHO, rather excessive in this.

Eh, as I said earlier, it is a question of balancing easier access to the material for more customers vs reducing page count, and presumably price, slightly. WotC will ask itself a question like "will cutting the price of books by $2 create more extra sales than we'll lose from all the over 45 gamers out there that won't be able to read the book anymore?"

I guess it would be interesting to know the demographics of purchasers of different books and games, though I suspect even WotC can't really get complete data on that. I just know that I sat in B&N and looked over the PF core book thoroughly, and between the sheer obtuseness of PF rules, a small font, and the various screening and whatnot on the page reducing contrast it wasn't an enjoyable experience. So I didn't buy the product, which otherwise I might have been inclined to do.

Is there a 'compromise'? Well, maybe. I can't tell you at exactly what point size the text becomes more effort to read, or if a slightly less generous use of whitespace in the layout would make any difference without seeing it. I do know there's a difference and I suspect it is a continuum. Every move in the direction of tiny condensed text and monolithic "wall o' text" layout adds a little effort. At some point you begin to notice it and feel like you want to go on to something easier to read.

I rather like the book. My artificer is all lined up to take the ring mail fail next level (and when the character builder is updated), and I'm pretty psyched to use some of the armors on my other characters. Plus it's got the wand of wonder. ^.^ My bard will love that thing to death. One thing that was mentioned in the original post that I can't seem to find, unless I'm just blind is leveling up items. Does someone have a page number for that section?
