So I came up with this idea (do not ask how) of having a wizard character, who happens to own a rather nice home (about 45-50 feet to a side at the base, maybe 5 stories plus attic and a couple of higher rooms), and wants it to move.
Like, across the ground. Top speed no more than 20 mph or so, a decent clip but nothing outrageously fast (or maneuverable for that matter). It's useless as a battering ram (the house would break before a gate or wall did) and in general is meant to go around obstacles, rather than through them. Nor is it meant to fly - ground-level motion is fine. This seemed to me to be a nicely quirky way for a mage to show off his power, without getting into munchkin territory.
My question is - how exactly should this be done in game terms? If a new spell, what level? Lower-level solutions are obviously preferred. Several hours' duration at least would be nice, some self-direction would be useful but not absolutely necessary - basically, something that can cruise the desert or plains day and night while the wizard stays busy with more important matters than steering a horse.
