[Modern/3.5] Crossover CRs

Hey

I have a quick Q that has probably been answered before ... but are the CRs given for monsters in the 3.5 MM useable in a d20 Modern game? They look to be similar, but I want to verify with anyone that has experience in the matter.

Thanks

It'll depend on a lot of things, but, no, I wouldn't suggest that you drop monsters from 3.5 into d20 Modern assuming their CR's are correct. D&D assumes that the PC's will have a certain level of magic, and d20 modern doesn't necessarily hold to that assumption. I mean, take any creature with DR anything/+1; in your average D&D game, a party will likely have that - in a d20 modern game, there's no assurance, and that might make the encounter far more difficult.

Personally, I think going from D&D to d20 Modern, the creatures making the jump will be slightly more difficult than in their home environment -- DR, special abilities not necessarily seen in d20 Modern, and a few other issues crop up.

Reversing the transition, I think a d20 Modern creature in D&D is toast -- most often, they have skimpier resistances, lack access to potent DR or special abilities, and simply don't have the AC or BAB to cross swords with the average D&D adventurer.

Compare the CRs of the 'shared' monsters - the ones that appear in both D&D and Modern - and see if they match up or not.

If the players have magic, the main concern I think would be some of the higher-level monsters, which in D&D can dish out amazing amounts of damage. Since Modern has much more unforgiving Massive Damage rules, such monsters might be more dangerous there than in their home environment.

Okay, I can't comment on if they had same access to magic as DnD, but I can comment on Urban Arcana (which has a reduced magic level the DnD).

Some spoilers for Urban Arcana adventures (Stan!'s & in the book).

Displacer Beasts and Trolls are MUCH harder. Course, we're about to find out how the group does against a dragon (haven't seen it yet, but it is tearing up a club). Oh yeah, and a single necromancer and his skeletons are very nasty.
