Modern day materials on fantasy armor.

My setting uses firearms. I was thinking that armor should not be readily bypassed by bullets so I'm trying to adapt materials like Kevlar or polymer ceramics to the rules. A la Phantasy Star. Ideas are welcome.

Depending on how powerful your guns are, and how good your steel is, you may not need to do anything. Use poor quality powder and good steel, and you're good to go. With smoothbores, anyway. In the early days, armor was rated as bulletproof by shooting it before selling it. If the bullet didn't penetrate, there you are.

Could you give us a little more detail what you have in mind? What sort of tech level are we talking about? There's a world of difference between black-powder muskets and modern assault rifles. And what are you looking for ruleswise? I mean, it's really easy just to say that a police-type ballistics vest is AC 12 light armor and a heavier military-type vest is AC 14 medium armor. Is there anything else you need?

Modern armor should have full Dex Bonus allowance because it is much lighter on the same protection level.

But even these days if special police units respond to someone armed with a knife or hatchet or so they use chainmail, just saw it recently.

It's more of a revolver gunblade or shotgun spear kind of thing, post apocalyptic world where you make your own weapons. Humans still pass down knowledge of how to make armor with these materials. DND 5e rules.

Well, are you going to bother with AC vs damage type? i.e. chain mail is AC X vs slashing and piercing, AC Y vs Bludgeoning, AC Z vs bullets...

If not, then IMO I don't see any reason why you need to worry about it. The advantages to firearms are; damage and rate of fire. There isn't too much difference in damage between piercing and a bullet.

Besides, isn't elven chain pretty much a fantasy equivalent to Kevlar?

It's the first time I use firearms and to me the type of armor should count, one type might be more effective against certain types of damages than others.
