Several months ago, I gave a Ring of Angels (an item from the Book of Eldritch Might II) to a character IMC as treasure; soon after, the player took a long trip to Europe, and he's only now returning to the group.
I'm a little worried about the ring, although I'm hoping that the once-per-week limitation will prove a useful limit. I've added some other capabilities to the ring, however, and would be interested in folks' ideas of how much the ring ought to be worth (the PC has leveled up in the interim, and I want a sense of how much treasure he should have to be equivalent to the other party members). The additional powers are:
* Instead of summoning the valiance per the summon monster spell, it can be summoned in a mental-only form. In this form, it can communicate only with the ringwearer and can cast only divination spells, but it hangs out for one full night (or long enough to cast identify once). Using it this way uses up the once-per-week summoning.
* The arcane angel can teach a wizard any spell that the angel knows as a sorcerer, allowing the wizard to write it into his spell book (although he still needs to pay all scribing charges).
* The ring itself is inscribed with the spell "Lesser Planar Ally"; a wizard may prepare this spell from the ring as if from his own spellbook.
OTOH, the ring is keyed to one specific arcane angel who specializes in divination magic, making it slightly less useful as a combat machine.
How would y'all price the ring with these changes? Does 15k instead of 10K sound about right? Too much? Too little?
