Modos RPG Playtest 1: the One True System

Playtester input: casting damage

My playtesters have observed that non-min/maxed casters are lucky to be able to cast one spell every three hours. And even a dedicated caster is going to have problems casting two spells every few hours.

I think that two perks and a rule change can fix this pretty neatly:

Rule change: casting damage is treated like any other metaphysical damage: it can be reduced by protection.

Perk, Tuned: your max MP damage increases by 3.

Perk, Mystic Ward: you gain 1d4 MP protection. Stacking this perk increases the die type.

These changes mean that, on average, a 1st level spell causes 5.5 MP damage, and a character who has taken Mystic Ward once can prevent an average of 2.5 MP damage. The difference is 3 MP damage for a first level spell, and a caster with an MP score of 13 can cast four spells without knocking himself out. If he concentrates, he can regain one of those spells every 1.5 hours, and cast a total of 10-11 spells in a day with a couple hours of concentration.
